How is My Schedule, Freshman Year!

I am in LSA Honors and I just recently finished orientation and set my classes for the fall term. I plan to major in a science (pre-med)... How's my schedule and is it too difficult for my first classes as a freshman?

Great Books 191 (Required for Honors)
Biology 173
Calculus I 115
Intro to World Politics

I am not particularly strong in Calculus and I have heard that Calculus I is very difficult. I am also not a great reader, but a solid writer (Great Books). Biology is a course that comes natural to me, I am preparing for this class and Calculus over the summer. I chose Intro to World Politics because it fulfills my Honors requirement, I am genuinely interested in such a class, and I've heard great things from a peer advisor who once took the class.

Honest opinions please!

If I’m not a great reader should I look to switch into Classic Civ instead?

Man… so many pre meds.

Doesn’t look that hard at all to me. You’ll be fine

If you’re planning on majoring in the sciences, I would consider taking something like gen chem/orgo/physics instead of intro bio lab; a lot of further recommended science courses for pre-health students require those as gateways (granted, I have no idea what science credits you have coming in).

I’m assuming you’ve taken AP Bio if you’re registered for 173. If you end up sticking with that, you shouldn’t need to spend any of your summer prepping - it’s by far the easiest science lab you’ll take.

The following are the premedical coursework requirements for matriculation into the University of Michigan Medical School. Grades below “C” will not be accepted in any of the following required courses:

2 semesters of Inorganic Chemistry including at least 1 lab section
2 semesters of Organic (General) Chemistry including at least 1 lab section
1 semester of Biochemistry
2 semesters of Biology including at least 1 lab section
2 semesters of Physics including at least 1 lab section
2 semesters of coursework that includes intensive writing
6 semesters of Non-Science Courses

My advisor approved Biology 173 so I don’t see any problems with that. I was also advised to not double up on sciences each semester; I’ll take Gen Chem second. Also, based on the above information which is similar to most Medical Schools, I will need a Biology class no matter what as requirement to apply to Medical School.

Unfortunately, I was not accepted into honors because I applied after the deadline, so I do not have the privilege of taking Great Books! Your schedule looks great though! However, I was told it might be in one’s best interest TO double up on science his or her freshman year. And this advice is seemingly sound, considering that freshman science classes are the easiest (with the exception of orgo), and that there are still a number of other science classes that are requirements or recommendations for medical school. BIOLOGY 173 is only four hours a week (3hr lab + 1 hour class), so I think taking chemisty concurrently would be very manageable for somone of your caliber (you got into honors). I too am interested in pursuing pre-med, and am taking a chemistry class my first semester. However, I was advised to enroll in 173 if I could, and all the sections are closed right now, so I am trying to get in through the waitlist. Fingers crossed.

By the way, are you involved in any research communities such as UROP or MRC? I hear such extra-curriculars are just as important as classes for aspiring medical students.

I am actually on the UROP waiting list… Fingers crossed I get in!

With AP Credit, we get out of 1 semester of bio. So, does that mean we have to take 1 semester of bio with a lab to fulfill the med school reqs?

iamsocool, that is correct.

So basically with AP Credit, we don’t have to take anymore Biology classes after completing 173?

^No, you still have to complete 1 semester of a bio class and 1 semester of bio lab for med school.

^disregard this post haha

Would it be smart to move Calc I to second semester? I slacked off senior year… I feel like I could take a big hit from Calc I from the very beginning of freshman year. I can definitely start studying for Calc over the summer though. I wouldn’t really know what I could replace that with… maybe Gen Chem? Thoughts?

Re: Pre-Med requirements

Newnan Advising (regular-LSA) has a more detailed checklist of classes that you really should take to be a competitive applicant to medical school. For example, genetics is all but required (highly recommended) at most medical schools. I would highly recommend picking up this list even if you are in Honors, and though I’ve heard Honors has a pretty good pre-health advisor now, I still swear by the more experienced Newnan advisors.

Calc won’t be fun but the others classes look interesting. If you are strong in bio, you will be okay as long as you study hard for calc.

Does Chemistry 125(1)/126(1) & Chemistry 130 (3) satisfy 2 semesters of Inorganic Chemistry including at least 1 lab section ?

No, you still need p-chem (Chem 230 or 260).
