How is my schedule?

Hello, I am an incoming freshman and I will be taking

Engr101
Chem210/211
Math115

Is this doable? Would it still be doable even when I add Eng125 class?

Thanks in advance!

My son is taking ENGR 101, Chem 210/211, Math 215… and English125… this fall also… His advisor seemed to think its doable…

^I agree with the advisor, and believe that number classes is manageable. Unfortunately, many have recommended that I wait until at least the winter term before I take such a courseload to make the college transition easier, and I’m not eager to disregard their advice, as they speak from experience. Besides, I also have UROP to consider.

So, Imconfidential, your course load as of now is very doable, and I am taking a similar number of credits. If you don’t have any other time obligations, I don’t see you struggling with an English 125 class. In fact, any advisor would recommend it, because an average college student (without many AP’s) would not graduate in four years if they take the same number of credits that we will be taking our first semesters as of now. But have you already signed up for English 125? Because I sincerely doubt there are any more spaces available in any of the sections. You will most likely be waitlisted.

^ Wow you guys are lucky, all of the advisers during my orientation couldn’t care less when I graduated, and they all told me to take 13 credits for my first semester.

Anyways I think your schedule, even with ENG 125, is doable.

I think the counselors are being cautious, which is good. However, they are not telling you is that you are not eligible for University Honors or Angell Scholar Honors for that semester with only 13 credits.

I know not many will get those, but you definitely might want to look into the different honors levels so you make an informed decision.

Jupiter, I looked into both of those, and I had a question. I will be doing UROP for work study, which will give me a total of 14 credits for first semester. However, as you probably know, UROP students don’t receive a grade until the end of the year, so will I still be eligible for those honors awards?

^ University Honors and James Angell requires 14 credits, but only 12 of those credits have to be graded, so you should be fine.

You might not be eligible for the William J. Branstrom Freshman Prize though which requires 14 graded credits, and fyi I think this award is the only way freshman can go to the honors convention (in case you’re into that stuff).

I don’t even know what that is. I typed in “umich honors convention” into google without any luck; is it the same thing as the honors convocation?

If so, does this mean that Angell scholars and University honors are not presented at the honors convention/convocation, and only the branstrom freshman prize is? . . . at least for freshman (sophomores, juniors, and seniors would receive their Angells here)

Also for University honors and Angell scholars, I read somewhere that apparently UROP won’t even show up as a credit until the end of the year, so it would only show up as 13 credits on my transcript at the end of first semester, and they would insert a grade as well as add a credit at the end of the year. Can you please confirm this?

I’m not sure all the details since my DD is a freshman too. It would be something to ask your counselor about.
