How is NU's endowment doing?

So I just got an e-mail explaining all the increases in tuition, room and board, etc. for next year. At one point in the e-mail, it said that they were trying to keep these increases low, despite losses to NU's endowment.

How bad are these losses? From things I've read here, as well as in the Daily, I thought NU's endowment was doing remarkably well. What gives? Is it just that we're doing well in comparison to other universities, or what?

It IS doing remarkably well… considering the circumstances. We lost far less than most comparable institutions, and are losses are in sectors likely to recover. NU’s budget is also far less drawn from the endowment as compared to, for instance, Princeton. But that doesn’t mean there doesn’t need to be some belt-tightening.

NU’s endowment is still among the top ten in the nation.

OK, thank you for clearing that up. :)
