How is Philosophy 12A: Intro to Logic?

just wondering as I might take this next year to satisfy a breadth req. Is it run like a math course? What do you do in discussions?

Thanks

You go over stuff in discussions...you do weekly homework from this weird software they give you (assuming Mancosu is still teaching it?) It's pretty easy.

I took Philo 12A in Spring of 2008 with professor Mancosu as an incoming freshmen. I got a D on the midterm and then worked my a$$ off and aced the final. My final grade was a B+. He gave weekly assignments that you could submit online to a program that would tell you the grade so you could keep submitting it until you had a 100% as long as it was before the due date/time. I felt the class was challenging, but wouldn't say it was hard. It was doable, and I definitely got a lot out of it. I think this is a great course to take and some people understand logic a lot quicker than others. He also lets you drop the lowest assignment. Its not a math course. I don't know how to explain logic other than calling it logic. I had a friend take it last semester and she didn't like the course. Logic just wasn't for her. I guess it depends on what you like, i felt logic was kinda fun in that it was like a riddle.

All mortals are human.

All humans die.

All mortals die.

(this is the basic type of logic, you look at it to see if it follows, later you apply notation to the logic and no longer use words but symbols that represent stuff like "all a's are b's" "if a is a b" "therefore a's are b's")

I had a really good GSI (Ian Schnee). In section we went over lecture again, whatever parts people were lost on. We also went over hw problems that we were having trouble with.

Hope you take the class, good luck.

I took an Intro to Philosophy class at a Community College last summer and it was pretty easy. iD's example is pretty much the kind of stuff we did, it's just how to form an argument properly.

I assume that's what it's like at Cal, cause the class was transferrable(sp?).

Sorry for bringing up an old thread but is the software package that comes with the textbook, Language, Proof and Logic, compulsory for the class? I signed up for this course for Freshman Edge and am deciding whether to buy an used book or a new one…
