How is Schreyer Honors College?

Has anyone heard yet, as to their acceptance???

I have not heard anything about when they will send out info this year. I am assuming by mid march…

the rumor I heard was that they were mailed on Friday

From whom?

I am in! (international from Greece so I got an email)

congrats perikilis
are you definitely going?

Yes! (ok if MIT accepts me I will probably think about it  but otherwise Penn State is my best choice!)

Congrats Periklis. The SHC at PSU is a great program. Check out the SHC class of 2015 page on facebook. Current scholars working the honors orientation program this fall are members as well to answer your questions.

My daughter received her letter from SHC yesterday. She did not get in. I know it was a very competitive process but I wish SHC could provide applicants with some feedback as to where they fell short. My daughter has done very well, top 1% of her class. But, as I said, I know the competition was tough.

nygiants, my son was accepted at Penn State last year, but not into Schreyers.

He deferred his admission, and took a gap year to travel (his dad lives in Europe). He applied to Schreyers again (even though they told him it was highly unusual to get in if one applies again). We really did not expect him to get in, but much to our delight, he was accepted into SHC! Just got the letter today.

He had some things to add to the application this year: high scores on AP classes in his senior year, a great letter of recommendation from a half-year course in the second semester of his senior year (he helped teach the course), and his maturity helped him write better essays (I assume - I did not see them; I was very proud, because he really wrote them completely himself).

That is one thing I don’t like about the whole application process: if a kid does really well his senior year, it just doesn’t count! Just seems stupid that kids who get in to a school can just coast the rest of the time in high school, and other kids who really come together in their senior year can lose out.

Can a current SHC student tell me if I have a decent chance of getting into the honors college, based on some of my stats?

GPA: 4.32/4.60 W, 3.75/4.00 UW. took mostly honors/ap classes
Rank: 1/244 (I know my GPA isn’t stellar, but will my rank help me significantly?)
SAT: 1960 (610 CR, 660 M, 690 W) I know, not the greatest :frowning:
ECs: slew of honors societies (including NHS), physics club, international club (pres.), newspaper (editor), business club, varsity club, math tutor, cross country/track captain, year-round job. However, community service is somewhat lacking (maybe 25-30 hrs at best)
Essays: Do well in writing, so essays will hopefully be good
Recs: Probably decent, but not superb
Hooks: none
Haven’t really won any awards, except for a ton of medals in cross country/track (school doesn’t give out any awards)

I’m a white male, in-state, and plan on majoring in actuarial science. PSU isn’t really my top choice, but if I get into SHC I’ll probly strongly consider it with the scholarship and prestige. Any feedback is appreciated. thanks!

Sam, my best advice for you would be to look for a way to grind your SAT numbers up. Schreyer’s boasts an incredibly high SAT, competitive with HYP, so that’s one area you could improve.

On a secondary note, you may also consider trying to increase your volunteer efforts. It’s great that you’re involved in track, but if you’re part of all these clubs (leadership positions included), why are the numbers low? Would it be possible to add volunteer activities to those clubs and EC’s?

Just trying to make some suggestions. There is truly no guarantee, but I do promise you this - apply by the first, early deadline. It is ABSOLUTELY critical if you want to get in.

Make sure you have a lot of solid leadership positions and that your essays aren’t generic. =Show passion for you major. A ton of amazing kidds apply so you need to set yourself appart.

Sats score need to be good to get into main, but Schreyer honestly doesn’t look at them no matter what dissappointed applicants say.

I think it is important to show passion, but they do not expect every applicant to have figured out what s/he wants to major in at age 18.
