"And yes, PSU does have class on President's day."

no kiddin'. i just got back from my dual enrollment class that i'm taking at the abington branch. i was all excited about having no (HS) school but i DO have my psu class, haha.
it was all good though, i got a 120% on my exam, one of the four total grades for the class.

I'm going to join the club and ask cwryan a question... So I've read that honors housing is not 100% honors; I believe the last statistic I saw was more around 60-70% honors. What do you think about living in the dorms as a non-honors student? In the event that I don't get accepted (which in all honestly is probably likely), I still think I'd like to live there because I'd like the environment. I have requested the SLO on my housing contract that I submitted in December. So I guess what I'm asking is, sure the statistics /say/ that there are non-honors students living there, but in your opinion, since you're there right now, would a non-honors student feel alienated (or something similar) living in the honors dorms? Perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself, but oh well. Thanks!

No I would say non-honors kids do not feel "alienated" living with a bunch of nerds for the year. If anyhting they love the extra help they get come exam time.

You are right with the stats, housing likes to mix it up a bit to prevent 100% honors kids. God that would be dull, haha.

My neighbor is non-honors and he lives with an honors student. He actually was rejected and is building his credibility by living in the honors dorm and taking some honors classes so he can appeal the decision at the end of the year.

Ah, that's awesome, just what I wanted to hear--especially about your neighbor. That was my exact plan if I get rejected. Well, nothing to do now except cross my fingers and wait. Whatever happens happens.

I just had some questions about Schreyer so if anyone has any input, would be greatly appreciated!

I recently visited the school and I noticed that there wasnāt really much going on in the lounges of the honors dorms, socially I mean. It may have just been the day I went, but how are the honors dorms socially? Do people keep their doors open or hang out in the lounges or anything?

eh, its kind of hit or miss in the honors dorms. It depends on where you get assigned and who your floormates are.

The main lounges- GFC and the main lobby tend to have people there a lot, talking and studying. The lounges on each floor tend to be dead most of the time.

If no one was around the main lobby areas of the lounges it was probaly becasue it was mid-day and people were either in class, napping, eating, hanging out somewhere else on campus, or napping (yes I said it twice, sleep is good at college).

Haha! Thanks cwryan1! I definitely know how important napping is! Are you currently a student at SHC? If so, do you know if the study abroad opportunities are better for the honors students and how that works?

yep I am a current SHC student. SHC and PSU in general pushes study abroad hardcore. Part of the SHCās mission statement is ābuild a global perspectiveā so you can imagine it is a big deal for the SHC. Being an honors student, you have access to more money to help you study abroad than a reg student would have. A scholar can then combine this money with travel abroad aid from the study aborad office of the univ. Scholars I talk to paid little for short trips and semesters abroad in various places across the world.

Some travel aborads are worth honors credit as well.

Hi im about to be a high school senior in PA and im looking into Penn State especially Schreyers Honors College, but Iām not sure if i can get it. Iām currently ranked in the top 5% of my class and have a 4.5 weighted gpa. Iām involved in fbla, german club, national honor society, and the varsity tennis team. I got a 2080/1400 on my sats. 720 Math 680 CR 680 Writing. What do u guys think? What would my chances be of getting in?

Thanks for your input cwryan. So Shreyers doesnāt use the SATās to decide who is admitted to schreyers? Are the sat scores just used for scholarships then?

You are correct, the SHC does not look at standardized test scores in making their selections. If picked you receive money through the honors college as well as become eligible for more money through your college and the University.

SAT scores in general will make you eligible for need+merit and merit scholarships at the college and university level.

I just got accepted to Schreyer today, and I was wondering, mostly because Iāve lived off-campus thus far, but, anyway, Iām not planning on moving up to UP until Spring '10,so when should I look into signing up for housing. I donāt want to mess it up, leaving me with a frantic search for housing, and knowing as early as possible would help out a lot.

Iām currently enrolled at PSU(not main campus) and have a 4.0 in engineering with about 80 credits under my belt. Is there really any benefit for me to try to get into SHC as a junior? I thought I read somewhere that the scholorships were only for the incoming freshman.

Ryan, you forgot to tell him that it also means he has to write a senior thesis, which is a big negative to many people (to some it can be a positive, but to an engineering major? probably not).

You have to decide for yourself whether the honors distinction is worth the extra work.
