How is Stony Brook's Campus and the Surrounding Areas?

I'm thinking about going to Stony, and I will be living in the dorms there. My teacher said he had a fantastic time at Stony, and that there are a lot of things to do on campus and outside of campus, but he was a student there a long time ago, so I don't know how much it's changed. So could someone tell me if it's a lively place there and if the area surrounding it is nice and active (unlike, say, Bing's area?)? Thanks.

I went on a campus tour today, and the dorms were pretty nice. There were two options. One was like an apartment, where you would share your room with another student. The apartment floor would be of the same sex and there would be around 30 people on the floor. The 6 shower bathroom is shared by the 30 people on that floor. The other option is the suite, which is a building with 3 rooms (2 people per room). The rooms are smaller then the aprtment rooms, but there is a shared living space for the 6 people and a single bathroom to be shared by the 6 people. The suites were coed, just as long as the 2 people sharing the room is of the same sex.

For things to do outside of campus...there wasnt much in my opinion, but then again im from New York City which has endless things to do so everything else pales in comparison. There was a movie theatre, a bunch of diners and a few stores...but that was about it. However, it seemed like there were a lot of things to do in the campus and they mentioned the had concerts and such all the time.

So which type of housing style do you prefer: corridor, suite, or apartment?

The tour guide told us that they didnt give you a choice when you want a dorm...they just give you whatever they have available.
