Our son needs some modest accommodations, such as extra time on tests and some extra tutoring. We met with Student Accessibility Services (SAS), and they seemed competent, and they said that the recommendations from his evaluation could all be accommodated. That’s fine, but I would like to hear from someone who has used them what the experience was like.
We received some conflicting messages on tutoring. We first heard that tutoring was only in groups of 4 to 5 students, nothing individual, working with a tutor and that the group would meet to tutor every 2 weeks or so. Not an impressive arrangement. Upon asking again later for clarification, we were told they tutor and students could meet more often. I am curious to learn the experience of those who have used the tutoring services.
At this point, the decision is down to Ithaca College and St. Lawrence University, and my son and I were far more impressed with Disability and Accessibility Services at St. Lawrence. They seemed completely on the ball, aware of teachers and dorms and the best ways of arranging schedules. He could get a single room at St. Lawrence if he wished it and still be with his freshman year program group. He could get as much individual tutoring as he needs.
However, other factors are inclining our son toward Ithaca College. Because it is a much larger school, I don’t know to what extent the SAS staff at Ithaca College are aware of teachers and other details, and as helpful at the St. Lawrence folks. We don’t expect SAS to be prefect, but are they at least good enough? Obviously everyone’s circumstances are different, but it would be nice to hear that SAS has worked well for other folks.
