How is the business program?

Hey guys,

I’m gonna be a business major and am considering U Bama cause I have a guaranteed 2/3rds scholarship there, but I haven’t been able to find anything on their business program because they’re not ranked. Does anybody know anything about their program, specifically business management?

Bama’s B school is very good. For some odd reason, it fell out fo the ranking this last year. It was ranked in the previous year.

Never heard why it fell out of the ranking because Bama’s B-school is quite good. It may just be a temporary thing and soon Bama will be back into the rankings.

Have you visited the website?

Were those numbers just released?

Can you provide the link?

Those are from the 2010 US News Rankings which means they were ranked in 2009…new rankings usually come out in August. You need a sunscription to the premium on-line rankings for access to the complete list. (I probably violated some box I checked saying I agreed to their terms by cutting and pasting those.)

New Rankings come out in 21 days and about 3 hours…they have a count down on the US News Web Site

Culverhouse College of Commerce [Rankings & Data](<a href=“Home - The Culverhouse College of Business”>Home - The Culverhouse College of Business)

Oh that’s good, because somehow I got the impression that Bama’s B-school ranking had dropped beyond 100 in the ranking that I was looking at last winter when another student was looking at Bama. I was hoping it was just a “one-time thing”…so I’m glad that Bama was ranked.

LauraG - Honestly, don’t worry about the rankings. Schools like Bama are going to have fine undergrad programs. Much more important is if you like going to a school with the characteristics of a Bama. Do you prefer large schools? Are you into the sports and Greek scene? Are you OK with the college town atmosphere? Vitually all the schools on that list offer fine business programs. If you stick with business, you will probably want to get an MBA at some point anyway. That’s where it really makes more of a difference where you go. Focus on the school that fits you best academically overall, financially, and for lifestyle preferences. That is where you will be happiest.

•The University of Alabama’s Manderson Graduate School of Business earned three top-10 rankings in the most recent issue of The Princeton Review’s “Best Business School” guide. UA’s graduate business program ranked fourth for campus facilities, fifth for quality of professors and eighth for administration.

The above was from Malanai’s link. As with UA’s College of Engineering, the UA Business School is poised to rise in the “rankings” given UA’s ongoing hiring of a large number of new faculty members, in an academic buyer’s market. FYI, due to its recent tremendous growth in enrollment and quality, UA is one of the few schools in the nation that has the ability to hire significant numbers of new faculty members, even in this bad economy.

One more thing about the “rankings”. Most of the rankings of individual university departments depend on the often snobbish perceptions of American university faculty. A big part of that is the opinion of a school’s faculty’s research, and less so on a school’s rep for its teaching. I think one of the reasons that UA’s department rankings seem to lag is the fact that UA still provides more of a teaching focus than many other large state schools. I hope that UA finds a way to maintain that personal attention as it improves its research rep.

Hi, ya’l (How’d I do…practicing for move in…)

More important than rankings in mags are ‘WHO IS HIRING graduates? How many get jobs and how soon? What areas?’

My son is planning on an accounting major and Bama has several international and national firms that support the school…and hire its grads.

Actually, the Accounting Dept. at UA is one of its top ranked departments, and the top one in the Business School. I don’t have a current reference, but remember seeing it highly ranked in a recent annual list. Anyone have a link for it? I imagine the UA Accounting Dept. website has info about it.

[Culverhouse School of Accountancy](<a href=“Home - The Culverhouse College of Business”>Home - The Culverhouse College of Business)

UA Accounting ranked 15th among public schools in US News annual rankings

and “The Public Accounting Report” ranks UA’s Undergrad Business School 15th, and its Grad School 19th

Yes! We knew it was highly ranked but I still think getting respect of employers outranks or equally ranks what publications say about a place…:)

Well does anybody have a link to an employers list? I know some colleges especially in professional fields will post something like graduates of X Business School have been hired by companies such as ______.

It would depend on what area of business the person graduates from.

Which area of business will you major in?

We spent our time with the Dean and staff of the school of accountancy.

Do call your department and talk to them. Alabama just continually impressed us and like so many others, my son had other choices but Bama became number one after our visit.

Rankings have to read carefully: who are the respondents, what questions are asked, in what area is a ranking given. That includes things like “quality of food on campus.” So, if you are going to look at rankings, be sure you see what area the school ranks high in…(sorry English folks, I know that sentence construction is poor.)

Skills get jobs. If you are going into accounting, Mrs. Davidson is a wonderful contact who can tell you exactly who hires. There is also a jobs center but my son is just starting this year so we don’t know much now. Get busy on the phone if you’re really interested. All know I struggled with the idea of ‘Alabama’ - its a long way from home.

Has anyone had any exposure to the marketing program or the women’s initiative program? I would love to hear what you think about either.

I don’t know a whole lot about Culverhouse, but I’ve heard that the Supply Chain Management program that is within Marketing is very good. The other programs may also be quite good, but I’ve recently heard about the SCM program.

*UA marketing grads have landed jobs with Proctor & Gamble, Kraft, Eli Lilly, Phizer, Altria, Dell, Apple, Home Depot, Saks Fifth Avenue, Maersk, Philip Morris, Federated Stores, Enterprise, Hewlett Packard, Wal-Mart, Coca Cola, Frito Lay, etc.

UA’s internship program provides students with domestic and international opportunities to hone their skills and gain valuable experience prior to graduation.*
