I'm a Petro Eng who recently transferred to ULL and I feel kinda discouraged
with the number of recruiters coming to my school this fall. Especially since
I'm aiming to work for an operator. I was just wondering how is everyone
else fairing at their career fair this Fall

Do not get discouraged. This is the way I got my internships:
1.- Went to career office they helped me to prepare my resume and I had a “practice interview with them”. They gave me very helpful feedback to improve my interview skills.
2.- Talked to every oil company that was on career day at my school. I talked for about 7 minutes. If you are young person, try to talk to the young recruiters for they are more likely to accept you. I am 52 years old so I got called for interview only by older recruiters (I guess they did not care about my age).
3.- Practiced 2 minute presentation so I knew what to talk to them during the first minutes. Go to their informational sessions. The more they see you the more they may get interested in you.
4.- I got 14 interviews last year with no offer. I persisted got another interview last spring and got my internship at Shell.
5.- Practice difficult questions: why should I hire you?. Which are your weaknesses, etc. those can be found online.
6.- Do not be shy or aggressive just be yourself and very confident. Your GPA talks about the great job you are doing in school.
7.- Persistence pays off. This year got 3 offers for internships since my first internship was at Shell I had 11 interviews.
8.- Companies mostly hire junior or seniors not sophomores, but I suggest you to try Shell since they take sophomores. Other companies that take sophomores: Sandridge, Devon, Chesapeake, Chevron, sometimes BP.
9.- Go to the SPE MEETINGS IN YOUR AREA SO YOU GET TO KNOW PEOPLE. THIS IS MOSTLY WHO YOU KNOW IN THERE. OPEN YOUR NETWORK WITH THOSE MEETINGS AND DO NOT BE SHY.
10. Before any interview go online search the company learn their culture, financials (how much sales and profit per year). What new project s they have and talk to them about that. YOU MUST SHOW YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THEM BY KNOWING INFO FROM THEIR WEBSITE. Have at least 3 questions ready to ask them so they see you have interest in them.

Practice interview with friends who got internships, or relatives to correct mistakes. DRESS YOUR BEST SUIT. NOT JUST A SHIRT, TIE AND NICE PANT IS NOT ENOUGH.
