What do you need to get on it to be exempt from taking foreign language in college? How does it compare to the AP test? Is it in simplified or traditional chinese? Can i take more than one foreign language placement test during orientation? thanks

If you get a 3 or higher on the AP, I believe you've met the language requirement. Typically one year of college study prepares you to pass the competency exam. You can take multiple language placement tests, but scheduling difficulties may mean that you don't take each test during O-Week.

I do not know about Chinese specifically, but you can look on the Chicago website for more information.

Can one take a language placement of his/her native language?

Carefully investigate this. I believe I read that though this was previously possible, that there were discussions about changing it. I do not recall if, or when, this was going into effect.

I thought it was possible, but call up Admissions and ask if you can't find the answer online.

...Seems tough to determine "native" language in a lot of cases, though. I wonder how that will work out, if that is the new policy.

I'm not entirely sure what the policy presently is but I am of the opinion that people whose native language is not English, should be exempted from the foreign language requirement provided that they can demonstrate proficiency in their native language.

Here's what Austin Bean posted on the Thickenvelope blog on this topic:

English as a second language will not count as a foreign language but your native language might. In (original questioner)'s case it will not because Georgian is not among the 40 or so languages in which we offer placement tests. Russian, Ancient Egyptian, Kazakh, Uzbek, Norwegian, Macedonian, Babylonian, Assyrian, and Armenian do count though...

So, basically, it seems like a variety of native languages will satisfy the requirement. Sucks to be you if you're a native Georgian... but if you're from ancient Egypt I guess you'll be just fine.

haha thanks you guys. they r really helpful^^ luckily i speak Chinese hehe

Do they give exceptions for different dialects? I've no clue how to speak/listen to Mandarin because I speak a different dialect, but on paper I'm Chinese, just the same.

can one take multiple foreign language placement tests during oweek?

^...........

...I was originally going to add on to that post "don't quote me on this." Too late. Seriously, you may want to call the office or wait for your O-Week materials for this one.

Is it O-Week as in Orientation Week or 0-Week as in Zero Week?

The former.
