How is the food scene at Rutgers (both dining halls and around town?)

I was just wondering how the food scene was at Rutgers (I'll be going there next year but just want more info). I know Busch is the best dining hall, but thats about it. Why is the best? Hows the dining hall selection? Is it like buffet style?

How about around town? Good variety of ethnic foods? Prices? Also I heard there is a White Castle nearby, how is it?

Welcome to Rutgers. The food in town is awesome; you have the famous Grease trucks on college ave, home to the Fat Darrel, the #1 sandwich in America. There is a Starbucks and other cafe's at a walkable distance from college ave. Busch dining hall as you said is also good. There is a lot of variety of ethnic foods. BTW, I am a pharmacy student (1st year)

Im Going To Rutgers To. I Had That Fat Darell Sandwhich. I Died And Went To Heaven! Im Going To The Open House 2moro. They Also Have A Coldstone Nearby So U Cant Beat That!

On a different angle on the food issue, does anyone have any input on vegan dining at Rutgers? Brower [and other halls] seem to have daily vegan options. Does anyone have any input on the quality of dining hall vegan food and off campus vegan? thanks

I have a question. How do the dining halls work? I know meal plans allow you a certain amount of meals, but what constitutes a meal?

I'll rank the halls.

Busch

Nielson (Douglass)

Brower (CAC)

Tillet (livingston)

Tillet and Brower are far behind the first two. I have some vegetarian friends and have came across a few vegans, who often complain about the selection at Brower. I'm pretty sure you can e-mail the dining services suggestions. People at CAC often get take-out, which they have for lunch and dinner. For lunch they have chicken patties, burgers and grilled chicken. Dinner they have sub, pasta, wing/chicken nugget nights. To be honest I get take out at least 10 times a week. Not that bad. Brower has its on and off nights.

I'm one of the few who actually like Brower (on the inside). It's gotten much better this year, and I feel like Busch has gotten worse, but I only eat at Busch for lunch sometimes. Brower offers a really improved deli line and salad bar this year, and they offer sushi every night. So even if the hot line is kind of off, there's always something to eat.

I still have a headache from one of the sandwiches at the Grease Trucks.

Food is great

Gerlanda's serves whole wheat pizza, and King Pita has some interesting middle eastern food that slightly healthy; both in the CAC student center. I ate in Brower once, but decided the meal plan wasn't worth it.

opmsma--I live on Douglass and eat at Neilson most of the time, and the vegan food's not bad, but there isn't a lot of variation. As far as the hot food is concerned, there's always this Chinese-style rice and tofu/vegetable mix. Then there's two other dishes that change daily.

moo-q, thanks for the vegan information. We went to the Admitted Day yesterday, but did not look at Demarest. Our guys are in honors and hopefully will get Brett. On the tour we saw Tinsley which was depressing. Although the buildings are very similar, Brett [which a student was nice enough to show to us] was far nicer. How is Demarest?

I took a tour of Demarest yesterday and it was awesome. It seems slightly off topic for this thread since it's not about food, so I'll post a description of Demarest on the thread about College Ave Dorms

The food in town is amazing. Lots of variety, both in cost and style. For cheap places grease trucks (if you want to die very happily), thomas sweet (the best ice cream), and stuff yer face (only carded me once. Yeah..i didn't get any beer that night). Then if you want expensive...well, you can go all out. Personally, sapporo and frog and the peach are my favorite restaurants i've ever been too. <3 I have yet to eat at the etheopian place. Always wanted to though.

I can't talk about the cafs. I'm just a high school student who lives in the area.

New Brunswick has some amazing places to eat from cheap to quite expensive. Some new interesting places have just opened too.

As for how the dining halls work, they swipe you in at the entrance for one meal. After that, you are on your own. I know people preparing for exams who go in early and spend the day there.

Old Man Rafferty's..great pub/restaurant. Big menu and amazing desserts.
When I visit my D...that's where I take her. Obviously not a place to go a lot on a student budget, but it will be good for a treat.

New Brunswick has great food whenever I have friends come to visit me here they always love it. There are a ton of pizza places that also serve dinners which are very cheap and very good. Hansel and gridlle is one of the best places I have ever eaten at. Just walk up and down Easton Ave basically and you'll find a ton of places. Dinning halls are alright busch is probably the best but it will still get old after a while. It does offer a vegan section on weekdays but I know that on weekends it might be tougher to find something.

does food really matter in what colleges/university u goto? lol i dont really care IMO i just want to get into a college that has the major i want :x but thats just me

I definitely think so. You're gonna want options. Remember that you're gonna be in college for at least 4 years. You don't wanna be eating the same thing over and over again.
