Fast download speeds? Does Rutgers complain about torrents or stuff like that?

you have a bandwidth limit. if you go over bandwidth, you get kicked off the internet for a week with no access to anything but my.rutgers and rutgers-affiliated things. sooo…i don’t even know if you could download torrents and the sort. (i don’t know anything about torrents, but things like limewire etc are a no-no) just get dc++ or shakespeer, and songs take less than a second to download while movies take like two to five minutes, even less.

Faaast download speeds for torrents . . . however . . .

like naoise stated, you’ll get kicked off the internet for a 7 day period with only access to all things Rutgers related.

So, while the downloading speed is fast, don’t risk it because they do keep track and will send you an email stating how you’ve gone over the limit and you will have to resort to checking your hotmail and all things necessary at the Alexander library at 8 in the morning ::ahem:: personal experience . . . and I never got to finish downloading that freakin’ television show . . this was before I knew about DC++ =

What is the bandwith limit?

It is also necessary for RUWireless and RUWired to limit how much bandwidth a host consumes over a period of time. This limit is more a matter of conserving Internet hand-off bandwidth than a user QOS issue. Since users are encouraged not to use RUWireless and RUWired for high bandwidth purposes the limit is set at 4,000 MB within a 7-day rolling window. It should be noted that this limit is set purposefully high, so there will be no exceptions made to this policy. Access will be restored the first day that the 7-day rolling window is below 4,000 MB.

Wait… 4,000 MB? Thats 4 GB. Are they kidding me? I could do 4Gb iin one day, especially since you say the internet is nice. But 4GB throughout 7 days? ***

4GB is plenty. Remember that you won’t be watching TV shows streaming because you can just download them off DC++ at speeds of 1mb/sec. They’re pretty fast about putting shows up too - I could get 24 the night it was shown on TV. The only reason you would use 4GB is if you used torrents or if you watched youtube a lot.

I think RU Wireless and RUWired are different though - you can use 4000 on one and 4000 on the other.

What is this DC++? Where are these files coming from

from other rutgers students

what if your playing games such as WoW or DOTA?

games should be alright, ppl play xbox live and download updates and such and it’s not much, and one should be careful with torrents, i’ve heard of incidences where ppl accidentally went over the limit cause they weren’t watching how much they were seeding/leeching.

how about “internet phones”? my friend took a wireless phone (its not a cell phone, not a landline phone) and he said the internet doesnt work there? and i was reading about “what to bring” and it said that if we’re to bring a telephone, we have to contact the service telecom of our choice? doesnt that mean there is no internet? im confuded :S

why would u need anything more than a cell phone??? i cant think of any reason to even get a phone for the room…

facebook and a cell is all you need…

wireless phones? as in like skype and oovoo where you can call people’s phones through your computer? i don’t know why you wouldn’t just use a cell phone…i guess because that costs money if you want to talk to people far away. but then why wouldn’t you just video chat? which is better, anyway. and yeah video chatting takes up bandwidth, but i’ve never gone over my bandwidth, even if I video chatted everyday for a few hours. and even if you’re in danger of going over bandwidth, you can just use your dorm’s wireless or the library’s or any other place where there is wireless.

and of course there is internet. they mean that rutgers doesn’t offer like a landline for every dorm room, like i’m assuming they used to before cell phones became so popular. buy an ethernet cable before you get on campus. it’s cheaper that way.

Could just use Google for video chatting, since Google does everything now.

So I’m guessing I should do all my torrenting on my own computer, then bringing an external hard drive for my fellow classmates?

just so you know: u need a cable for shakespeer/dc++
and no/little wireless access in dorm rooms, but full in lounges and everywhere else
also, for some reason there never was any in voorhees hall =[
it’s also sketchy in scott & hickman…but it does have it there

^ For some reason, I couldn’t get any access in Scott Hall either, especially in the classrooms (and at times, the lecture halls).

And yes, I think you should do all of your torrenting now, Emerica =)

Well I will be getting a nice big hard drive, hopefully 2TBs, if not 1.5 is my minimum lol.

I keep considering taking both my desktop and my laptop, cause my desktop is pretty beast. Anyone think that’s a bad idea? I’m a bit on the fence but more towards ‘no’.

I say, if you don’t mind carrying the desktop on move-in and move-out day, then sure!

But maybe I would stick to only the laptop, just for convenience =)

yeah i would stick to laptop for convenience’s sake. my roommate came in with a desktop and laptop and just ended up taking her desktop home like in october. it just kinda took up space. but i have friends who have both desktop and laptop (they’re kinda tech geeeeks) and i guess they found it useful. i personally don’t think it’s necessary. it’s just kinda unwieldy.

I think the reason I want it is cause my girlfriend said you can’t use laptops in class (is that true?) and I would be fine with my desktop but would I have enough room for the desktop, 22" and/or 19" monitor in the room? I was thinking of just having my laptop for those classes I can use them in and for a nice portable computer when necessary.

also, id call myself a tech geek and my laptop is a mac with dualbooted linux (ubuntu if you were wondering)
