How is the math department at WPI

How is the math department at WPI

I'm taking freshman classes in Calculus there.
The professors seem to know what they are talking about and they keep office hours for extra help.

I'm no math major, but it appears to be a great department.

Thanks IamGandhi2k7
And how about computer science and physics?
WPI seems good at engineering?

First of all, is Galois your actual last name, or a clever screen name for someone interested in math?

Anyway, as a physics and math major at WPI, I don't have any complaints. The math department is very nice for someone interested in applied mathematics/mathematical physics/actuarial science/etc. For those interested in pure mathematics, WPI is somewhat lacking, though there are still plenty of opportunities. Rather than having a sequence of lower level pure math courses, there are several very dense upper level courses which cover a wide range of material, but are tailored somewhat more for students wishing to get a foundational understanding rather than in-depth knowledge. Basically, for things like differential equations, analysis, numerical analysis, statistics, etc., WPI is fantastic. For interests in number theory, abstract algebra, topology, etc., WPI might not be what you're looking for. There are numerous individual opportunities (one of my friends takes advantage of independent studies), but you should be well aware that WPI has a mathematical sciences department, not strictly math, and the curriculum fits accordingly.

The physics department is small, though usually quite good. In particular, the advanced electromagnetism and classical mechanics courses are phenomenal, and the lab courses are also quite good. For those interested in graduate study in physics, WPI prepares you quite well, though the department does tailor strongly to those who want to go into industry.

I'm not quite the one to ask about engineering and CS, but my friends seem to have a positive experience. In particular, the CS department seems strong both in application and theory of computer science, though it is a very difficult department to excel in.

Hope this helps.

Thanks very much, ojnabieoot. It really helps.WPI has been in my list now.

PS:Since I am Chinese,Galois is definitely not my real name....He is my favorite mathematician.
