I got in as a Mechanical Engineering major in U of M this year.
How prestigious is the Mechanical Engineering (or Engineering in general) department of U of M?
It does rank high in U.S. News, but I would like to know how people think of it in general.
Thanks!

P.S. I am a Mechanical Engineering major.

First, let me say that I'm a Mechanical Engineering senior here at UM. Reputation wise, it's stellar. Michigan is often the most represented school in terms of internships at the top manufacturing/engineering companies. Last year, during the engineering career fair, more than 250 companies came, and 2/3 of those requested mechanical engineering majors. (I have a spreadsheet with all the information, but i can't find it at the moment) The engineering career office actually turned down 100 companies due to the lack of space at the engineering career fair. These companies include the powerhouse manufacturers, defense contractors, financial services, and managment consulting firms.

I do not know a single person at Michigan, who majored in Mechanical Engineering who does not have at least two job offers by graduation.

Wow. Thanks! And if possible, can I see the spreadsheet? (if you find it :P)

P.S. oh, and the P.S. I wrote on this thread was for another post I put up.... I got a bit repetitive there haha.

Hey jeffl who is the best ME211 teacher? I heard wineman is but i could only fit barber's class into my schedule. What can I expect in this class?

I had Wineman for ME211 and 311, he's a very straight forward professor, u almost know exactly what he's going to test. Barber is actually pretty good too, at the time i took it, his exams were multiple choice i remember, and u had to get everything right to get full credit. Both are excellent. If you goto lecture and follow the textbooks(which is usually very good), u should be fine.
