how is the mid-year report used in admissions?

On our application trackers, the Mid-Year Report seems like it is necessary to have a complete application, right? What about those of us who will not submit it until the end of Jan/early Feb? Does this mean our applications would be preliminarily reviewed and then reevaluated when the report arrives? Seems ridiculous if they actually waited until all the mid-years arrived to start evaluating.

Is the Mid-year just more of a check-up do see your not failing than an important piece of the application? I ask because I'm afraid I'm not going to be so proud of my mid-year, as some of us busy seniors aren't.

Anyone know?

Ahh.. should have searched the blogs before asking this. In case anybody else was wondering, Ben says:

".... if we feel that a mid-year report is needed to make a decision, no decision will be made until we have the report.
I should note that a mid-year grade report can't save an otherwise problematic application. We generally use them to confirm a decision (i.e. to make sure you're sustaining the work that led us to want to admit you in the first place)."

The mid-year report is more of a check-up to see that you're not suffering from severe senioritis. A lot of semester high schools aren't done until the end of January, so from my understanding, the mid-year reports don't have bearing on whether or not you get, but at that point, whether or not they have the grounds to revoke admission.

Now if I got deferred for that, then darn...I mean, I only take 5 classes, one independent study, one senior requirement, one AP, one elective, and one college course, so in essence only 2 classes. Even though I already maxed out all opportunities (i.e., even my college course is the highest level science taught at the college) it still looks like I "slacked off" in terms of courseload.

to piccolo- I am only taking 4 classes plus two not for credit plus a lot of independent study and I got in. My guidance letter explained that there's nothing left for me to take, and that college classes are currently out of the question because of expenses (UMASS is really expensive, apparently), so I am doing a lot of self-study. As long as your situation is explained, I think it is ok. SO, if you think that's why you were deferred, make sure to explain.

That's what I'm leaning towards...chalk it up to the GC to...nevermind, thanks for the advice though, I'll do just that.
