Being an African-American male from an upper middle class family, in Kansas, I can’t help but wonder if BU has a happening minority population. Not necessarily in terms African-Americans (although that would be helpful). Also do the minorities tend to integrate with the rest of the BU population or are there distinct minorities cliques?

P.S. Does BU take an active role in trying to attract minorities to their campus, to mitigate possible concerns as mine?

This is a tough question but part of the answer is that minorities tend to attract each other at every school and that individuals tend to have one foot in that group and the other outside. This is true at nearly every school I've seen.

I'd suggest contacting one of the African-American groups on campus - like the African Students Organization - so you can talk directly to someone.

If you'll allow me - and I hope this doesn't sound too patronizing - your situation is a little different because you're not only African-American but you're from Kansas. Boston isn't Kansas. Being upper middle class, you'll fit in with a lot of kids at BU - or at many other private schools - and the difference between Kansas and the East Coast may be the biggest to you.

Boston doesn't have a very large African-American community compared to many cities. The old history of racism has dramatically shifted for the better - it was as much a tribal war between old working class neighborhoods (i.e., busing) as racial - but Boston is noticeably whiter than many big cities. The area around BU is extremely diverse, but that diversity tends to Asia, parts of Europe and parts of South America, and is less diverse in the classic American racial sense. Not being African-American, I have no idea how it feels here or at BU.

All schools try to attract minority candidates, especially African-American males. One advantage of going to school in Boston is that there are about 250,000 students, which means a more minorities and more opportunities to reach across school lines.

Great! I am really excited. I just wish that some minorities weren't so closed be minded. You can have friends outside of your respective minority group!

Well, yeah, it's kind of like real life. :)
