How is the music department at NYU?

Anybody know anything about the music dept at NYU? Thanks.

mediocre...

it depends. tisch (which is relatively music) is amazing.. others are...ehh

Depends what you want. I hold two degrees from NYU (B.M. in Piano and an M.A. in Historical Musicology.) Depending on what you want to do specifically, it can be an excellent place. Private message me if you want to know more.

The CAS department of music (where I am currently working towards my Ph.D. degree) is definitely a more prestigious department. It has comparitively few undergrad majors but those majors get into excellent graduate schools.

Tisch School of the Arts is excellent but is more for people who want to be actors rather than musicians. Tisch DOES NOT offer degrees in music.

Again, private message me for more info.

what about the music business major at steinhardt school of education?

I don't know enough about the music business major right now since the faculty members have changed since I graduated in 2002. It's pretty much an interdisciplinary major with the Stern School of Business. From what I heard, the classes weren't the major selling point of the program, but rather the internship later on. The two people I was close with both ended up with jobs derived from their internships (one at Carnegie Hall, the other at Sony Classical.) I also know people who went on for their MBAs.

It gives you a good grounding in music, a great business education, and since it's in New York City, great internship opportunities.

thats perfect! I am an incoming freshman at NYU studying music business. It sounds great! after experiencing college auditions this year, I realized that I'm not strong enough to take the daily pressure that a musician is bombarded with. I'm looking for a practical major and a steady job. The opportunities and internships is pretty much the only reason why I'm deciding to go to NYU. Their website makes it sound so exciting, I hope I wont be disappointed. Do you know if you can still take private lessons with a faculty member if your studying music business?

The opportunities and internships should be the reason why someone goes to NYU (not that the school isn't wonderful as well and in my opinion underrated as far as academics.) The NYU department emphasizes that it gives a much broader education than you can find in a conservatory program because, let's face it, the number of concert pianists, orchestra positions, and composition jobs, is steadly decreasing. To be a musician today, you have to have a back up plan when Carnegie Hall doesn't work out (I know several Juilliard graduates who are struggling to find work and are doing something else now) In my program, for instance, I am earning a Ph.D. in musicology, several of my friends are in law school, one getting an MBA, one went on for an M.A. in Harpsichord and now is in an early music ensemble.

You can still take private lessons but usually not with the teachers reserved for majors.

Several details may have changed with the change in undergraduate directors since I was last there in 2002.

I actually asked for a friend of mine whose daughter applied and got in, I think for Music Ed. She's had sort of a hap-hazard college search process...She's actually a wonderful musician, and probably way beyond NYU, but, oh well..

Music Ed is an excellent program. And I don't base this on the classes, teachers, etc. Everyone in my year who graduated with a music ed degree has a job, a lot of them in very prestigious school districts in Long Island, New York City, and Virginia. Since getting a job is the point of any music ed major, I would say that this makes the program pretty good.

Anyone familiar with the music program at Northwestern? Or the fairly new music-journalism degree?

I have my Music Ed audition for NYU Steinhardt on Saturday, and was just wondering what to expect besides singing what I’ve prepared and handing in my essay. I’m really kinda freaking out so pls help!!
