How does a degree from H&SS look for law schools?

Is a degree from H&SS a LOT worse than a degree in, say, CIT or the SCS?

I will admit: I chose to apply to CMU because of its prestige and high ranking. However, I am not a tech or science type of guy. Would I be better off at a school that is ranked much lower but has more emphasis on humanities subjects?

Also, when I rank the schools on the common app supplement, do i have a lesser chance of getting admitted to schools that i ranked lower?

I don’t know much about H&SS but i don’t believe its worth 200 grand

CMU isn’t really known for humanities. I would assume that the school is really only there for people who want interdisciplinary study in technology and humanities. If you’re not interested in tech, it’s a waste to go to CMU. There are a lot of similarly ranked schools with great humanities programs, but they will probably be harder to get into (just as CIT is harder to get into than engineering schools at other universities).

So is the prestige of H&SS a lot lower than the rest of the CMU schools?

It’s CMU, so as far as prestige goes, going to any school there will look impressive. However, since you’re looking to go to law school, it doesn’t really matter where you go to undergraduate school and you should getting the best education. H&SS is probably not a bad school, but there are probably better (higher ranked) schools for humanities.

I just looked it up. Some programs at H&SS are in the top 20, some are in the top 50. So these programs are obviously not bad and without prestige. That said, when you consider that CIT, CFA and SCS are in the top 5 or 10 in their fields of study, then it’s clear that there are probably some other places you should consider before CMU for humanities (especially since you said you’re not interested in tech.)
