How is the Science sector at this school?

I was admitted to CSULB as a Molecular Biology Major and have come to see this institution as my top choice for a CSU Fall/2019 transfer. My goal in life is to become a scientific researcher specializing in genetic manipulation in/out of the bio-medicine. I am of a personality who likes independent learning with an emphasis for a healthily competitive setting. I believe that to get better as a student you need to be pushed to the “next step” by outside forces such as competitive peers with good grades. Also how is the research internship scene at CSULB or the City of LB all together? If their isn’t any then how far is the nearest commute to such a provision, since i actually wish to take public transportation in my term at this school. Thank you.
