How is the Search going, Splashmom, Fireflyscout, others?

Hi Rhodes buddies,

Still feeling somewhat mournful about my son not going to Rhodes, especially because I can't get on this site and check out the world of my friends. Then, I said to myself, why not? How goes the search? Still looking at Rhodes?

Hi!

Yes, Rhodes is definitely on the list, but D is really not in the mood to think about college right now. I'm laying back, trying to let her destress since things will start going crazy soon enough. She talked briefly to the friend that just finished her freshman year at Rhodes. This friend had a great year and definitely recommends Rhodes. I checked out the library webcam today and noticed that there are now trees, and sod is being laid. I can just imagine what it must look like on the inside.

Have you got everything ready for your son's dorm room?

Hi Fireflyscout!

I am glad Rhodes is still on your D's list, though I can sure understand her wanting to take some time off before thinking about college. My second son is just now deciding where he would like to visit, and I do not think Rhodes would fit him.

I think my S1 is going to be the beneficiary of my DD having graduated already! He will use her navy/light blue bedding, and gets to inherit her little fridge. I told him he really didn't need a rug, he can just walk around on his shirts and pants. (That is as at home. Hope his roommate doesn't kill him!!) I was really just kidding, I think. :)

Sounds like your son has the same taste in floor covering as my daughter.

Where is S2 interested in visiting?

And where is SplashMom??? Has she left the Rhodes forum for the Centre forum?

Good question!! Where are you, Splashmom?

S2 is going to visit Earlham, Beloit, Kenyon (real reach) and Lake Forest. He wants to study Japanese, at least he thinks that would be good. I think the Anime trend has him in its grip. There is a fairly good chance he will be able to study the language next year at the local LAC, so we will know better if that is a sensible major for him. If not, he is a good writer, and seems to have a real passion for literature. He talked a teacher into offering a course on Milton next year!

Splashmom must be vacationing.

My son thought about taking Japanese (they offer it at his high school), but is joining his best friends in taking Latin (can only imagine how that will sound when they are playing Dungeons and Dragons). Lately he's been reading books about how to write science fiction. I have absolutely no idea what he'll finally be interested in pursuing in college. He says he's interested in one thing, but his actions show other interests. Sometimes I just want to get inside his head and explore a bit (or maybe not!).

Of course, what leaps to mind about a course on Milton is the scene from Animal House where Donald Sutherland is trying to lecture about Milton to a very disinterested class.

Fireflyscout,

Sounds like your son and S2 would be great friends, he has been into D & D, science fiction, anime, fantasy literatiure, etc. How neat that your school offers Japanese. S2 took three years of Latin, and we had hoped he would take 5 before graduating, but he chose to drop it at the beginning of this last year. I do hope the Japanese will work into his schedule; if not he might be able to do an Asian Studies course.

I hadn't thought of that scene from Animal House for years. I recall Sutherland was really excellent in it. Think it is time to see it again!

I'm here, I'm here!!!! Hey there, momofthree and fireflyscout. Hope you both are doing well. I haven't had much time to visit the board. We were in Memphis this past weekend visiting D for parent's day (Governor's School at University of Memphis). Yes, D is still very much interested in Rhodes and it continues to be tied for #1 on her list along with Centre. She wants to do overnight visits to both, I think. We get to pick her up on July 8th and we're leaving from Memphis for the beach. She hasn't mentioned the college search at all in her e-mails or phone calls. I would be thrilled to see her at Rhodes or Centre and would be satisfied if she decided she didn't need to look at another school.

momofthree, I'm so happy for your son and know he will do fabulously well at Brown. I can only imagine the jitters you must be experiencing in preparing to send him off to school. I know, too, that you must be so proud!

fireflyscout, sounds like our Ds are about in the same position right now ... not really talking schools so much. I think my D is just excited about her upcoming school year. Before leaving for Governor's School, though, she did mention that she wants to retake the ACT and the SAT a.s.a.p. (October, I think) so she can apply early. I wonder if the scores from those test would be reported in time?

I hope you're both enjoying your summer! My FIL is still in the hospital (broken hip/pelvis on 05/29). He got to go home for three days, but had developed two terrible infections. He has now had three surgeries and hopes to go home sometime this week ... maybe even tomorrow. We're keeping our fingers crossed.

Hi Splashmom! Good to hear from you.

What is Governor's School? I've seen it mentioned, but we don't have it in Texas.

I'm pretty sure the October scores will be available for early action/decision. Centre has early action, right?

I'm sorry to hear about your father-in-law. Will he be going to a rehab facility? My mother is recovering from knee replacement, and is doing nicely (after some initial problems and hilarious hallucinations involving Pomeranians).

Here is a link that provides info about Governor's School of Tennessee. There are nine G.S. programs that are offered across the state of Tennessee ... Arts, Humanities, International Studies, Manufacturing Engineering Fundamentals, Science, Prospective Teachers, Scientific Exploration of Tennessee Heritage, Information Technology Leadership, and Agricultural Science. There are approximately 80 students accepted to each of those programs. My D is at the Governor's School for International Studies which takes place at the University of Memphis. The program has been in existence for 20 years. This is the first year they are offered college credit (six hours) for the classes they are taking and it's been tough because they are squeezing full semester of these classes into five weeks. DD is taking Political Science, Government and Portuguese. It is very tough, but they do have some fun activities, too. They live in dorms, eat in the cafeteria, participate in activities, dances, field trips, etc. Every student who is accepted into the program is given a full scholarship for the program ... everything is covered except spending money they need for outside activities. I believe the following states have Governor's School programs: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Wyoming and West Virginia. I believe other states have participated in the past, but don't offer programs at this time for one reason or another. I'm sure much of it has to do with state budgets, etc.

Yes, Centre does have early action. I really feel that Centre or Rhodes is just so right for DD. Of course, I want her to continue to research and visit any and all schools in which she feels she might have even an inkling of interest.

My FIL gets to go home today! He's very excited. He's bypassing the rehab facility and having PT come to the house. I'm glad to hear your mother did well with her knee replacement. Although you hate to see people have reactions from medications (was your mother on morphine?), it is kinda funny. I remember once when my sister was in the hospital on morphine and she was talking about her dog ... wonder what it is about dogs and hallucinogens? :)

Hi Splashmom!

So glad to hear your "voice" and to know all is well. I know your FIL is so excited. So sorry he has had such a rough go of it.

I remember being so excited to visit my DD at the Gov. School (Arts), seemed like she was gone forever before I could go, and it was only two weeks. How lucky for you that you were able to see Memphis and she was able to experience Memphis for a whole four weeks. That will really help her make an informed decision!

I remember being so excited to visit my DD at the Gov. School (Arts), seemed like she was gone forever before I could go visit, and it was only two weeks.

And now, this weekend that same DD is going to be getting married! I think all is in order, and I head her way Thursday for a little shower. All the rest of the festivities are Friday and Saturday. It should be great, but I appreciate your thoughts for safe travel and good weather, and a joyful time for all! Thanks!!

So, yes, my jitters are real, with both of those youngins' going off to their lives away from home. It is hard for me to believe, and though most days I am fine, others, I get really really sad. I am good at faking it, though, and only DH knows for sure how I am doing. :)

Oh, momofthree, you've got such exciting events happening in your life! I am so happy for you and for your children. I know the wedding will be beautiful and a good time will be had by all.

It has been difficult having DD away for such a long time (total of 6 weeks including the week of Girls State immediately before Governor's School). She's having a good time, though, and I know she is learning much. It really is a wonderful opportunity for students.

Have a safe trip and a fabulous time!
