How is the social scene at Stanford?

The social aspect of a school is very important to me, and I was wondering how it is at Stanford. In particular I'd like friendly students, a laid-back atmosphere, many parties, an abundance of alcohol, and an attractive student body. I know, it may seem slightly superficial or immature, but there are other factors one should consider when deciding on a school other than academics and prestige.

Also, how would you rank the social scene compared to my other top choices?

Vanderbilt
University of Virginia
University of Michigan—Ann Arbor
UCLA
USC
Stanford
Duke
Dartmouth
Northwestern

hey i agree pear. i have worked my A** off and i want to have some fun. could you throw UNC in that list? thanks

i heard the party scene was about as dead as leland

The party scene is far from dead.

It might not be a huge party school like UCSB or Wisconsin, but Stanford does have a pretty decent party scene. There's always multiple parties going on from Thursday-Saturday if you walk down the row.

The alcohol policy is incredibly relaxed, too. RA's don't care if you drink, just as long as people don't die, compared to where even at UCSB I have heard from my friends that RA's are really strict on alcohol in the dorms.

I can't say much for most of the schools on that list, but I would say Stanford is about on par with UCLA, but not as big on parties as USC.

^That's comforting, thanks.

A few more questions: how's the dating scene? Is it really as bad as most people make it out to be or is most of that just hyperbole? Also, are casual relationships or hook-ups a common occurrence?

Frankly every school you have listed has a pretty active social scene.

I visited overnight and alcohol and parties are FAR from dead. Um, yeah, a girl threw up in my room.

From the students, I hear people can get dates
