My daughter was wait listed at her number one choice, University of Minnesota Guthrie BFA program but she was accepted to UCSD and from what I am told, no audition is required for their BFA program. But is it a good program?

I don’t believe UCSD has a BFA program. It does, however, have a great theatre program. We know several students there. More drama than musical theatre (not sure what your D’s focus is.) La Jolla Playhouse is right on campus for excellent internship opportunities. Opportunities for students to to create and direct their own productions and such. San Diego itself has a lot of performance opportunities. Keep in mind that it’s an academic theatre major. She’ll still have general eds is various academic classes.

Double check on the BFA front but I’m pretty sure it’s a BA.

Thanks! You are correct. San Diego is a BA program. Since my original post she has been accepted to Minnesota’s Guthrie program and also University of Miami Musical theater program. Tough choice now. She is leaning toward Minnesota. Any thoughts?

@Pdubb57 Congrats to your D with these great programs! The UofM (MN) is a very solid research university in many areas. The Guthrie Program is outstanding, well known and will provide incredible opportunities. Many students get opportunities in NY from the strong connections in this program. If you don’t mind freezing much of the school year, this is a fantastic large, extremely well established theater program. UCSD has a solid program with many opportunities via the La Jolla Playhouse, but just on a smaller scale in a much smaller market than Guthrie. The location & weather at UCSD can’t be beat, it’s in America’s Finest City, SD. Miami, sorry I have zero insight to offer on this program, perhaps someone informed can contribute. Hope this helps a bit & best of luck.
