I'm surprised that I have yet to find a posted bulletin about the school itself...
What are the advantages of going to a large, major university? Any disadvantages? Are there plenty of things to do on campus and around town? What is the school itself like and what sets it apart? In other words, why did you choose UT-Austin (any regrets)?
I've been nagged about the whole college-search process, so I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!

Oh ayay yaya yayy ay yay

My main reasons:
1. Austin is awesome/only 3 hours from home/weather
2. The McCombs School of Business
3. Only $7000/year
4. Diverse, interesting, fun student body
5. Nice urban campus
6. National academic reputation
7. Longhorn spirit and football

Weather is one of ur reasons u like it? That is going to be one of the reasons why I hate it.

austin is the greatest city on earth. thats why i chose it.
its prestigious engineering program doesnt hurt. nor does the high likelihood of going back to McCombs for an MBA

Well, I do hate Texas heat in the summer but you are only in school from September through May; I'm not too privy to walking around in the icy blizzards of the northeast for 4 months while it is 70 degrees in January in Texas.

True that, but Im applying for spring '07, so when will my school months be?

Texas in the spring is probably the best, except for the rain.

Ya I went there once when it was raining and super humid, it was weird, and disgusting. So does anybody know my question?

I can't answer your question. Sorry. But yeah, texas is pretty bad in the middle of summer. It gets insanely hot.

Can't really comment on Austin, because I haven't been there yet, but I hear its a nice clean city with a lot of stuff to do (especially college students). What drew me in was the size (I wanted a large school), the basketball and football teams since I'm obsessed with college sports, the McCombs school of business, and the cost (25k out of state is a bargain compared to any of the ivies or top publics).

Don't know too much about the weather, but it sounds pretty nice for the most part. The first few weeks and last few weeks of school have potential to be extremely hot, but most of the school year should be pretty nice. Sure beats all the Northeast schools that deal with freezing temperatures and snow.

Ha, the weather in Texas is absolutely crazy... It's hot and humid one day, cold and rainy the next. Makes planning for stuff to do somewhat difficult.

Austin is in the hill country and it is much less humid there than the coast. It is absolutely beautiful in the spring with the wild flowers blooming and crisp cool evenings and moderate days. Even the summers are not that bad. Many people from Houston own homes in the hill country that they use in the summer to escape the heat and humidity. There are some great rivers near by that are fed by cold springs, and there is nothing better than innertubing down the Guadalupe holding a cold (beer for me) coke (for you underagers) on a hot summer day. The winters are very mild, in the 70's, except for the rare cold day, which for us is about 50 degrees or colder. It is pretty ideal unless you crave snow.

Wow, 70 degress in the winter, thats crazy cool.

oh yes....Austin and the Hill Country are so much nicer than the Gulf Coast. The Valley, where I was raised, has triple digit temps most of the summer; Houston, where we live now, is a humid mess in the summers...Austin is downright dry and chilly in comparison.

And since Austin is our capitol city, it is kept very clean and nicely spiffed up. Local music and restaurants are the best in Texas. Growing independent film industry provides interesting diversions as well. And you can be on the beach at SPI in less than 5 hours drive.

And ag54 is absolutely right....everyone must go tubing on the Guadalupe...it must be done! :-)

I've read the comparisons about the weather in Houston vs. Austin...how does the heat and/or humidity in Austin compare to Dallas?

I'm not sure how/if it differs, as I have rarely visited Austin, but anyone who lives in Texas can say that weather is quite unreliable and screwy. I've noticed this more in the winter since Texas never really does get cold.

Personal rant
Dang, I shouldn't get my hopes up; it seems as though I might be too poor to even get outside of Dallas. I mean I knew we were poor, but not THAT poor. It's in my own state and I do pretty well in school!!

U should be able to get scholarships and in-state tuition is super cheap.

Yes, so I've heard. It's just that when I actually talked with my dad about it this morning, he said not to get my hopes up too high as far as the cost goes. I've heard the school itself is a pretty good value.
