It’s looking like my college options are Temple, Penn State, and UVA.
I want to go to UVA but my parents are adamant about no fraternities for me. I enjoy going to parties in high school and think a frat would definitely be something I want to join, but I want to know that there would be alternatives like Penn State would have.
Sorry about the shallow questions I’m just worried I’ll be miserable.
UVA Class of 18 here. (Scary)…
UVA is about 30% Greek. What leads to a lot less Greek snobbiness and exclusion is the fact that UVA does Spring rush, so everyone ends up having a bunch of friends that are not in their fraternity/sorority or in Greek life at all. There are tons of bars, house parties, parties put on by clubs/sports teams, etc. Non Greek people also go to frat parties. You’ll be fine if you join a frat or if you don’t. There’s obviously an element of exclusiveness to Greek life always, but I think it’s pretty low at UVA. I’m in a sorority, I have roommates in my sorority and roommates not in Greek life at all, and my boyfriend isn’t in Greek life, if that tells you anything.
@kickemoff How large is the emphasis on partying and Greek life at UVA? Can a student get along fine without partying and getting involved in Greek life, or is there no avoiding it?
