How is this courseload for a 1st sem freshman?

Computer Science 61A (4 units)
Chemistry 1A (3 units), 1AL (1 unit)
English 166AC (4 units)
Math 53 (4 units)
Math 24 (1 unit, seminar)

I can always drop the seminar if it becomes too much, but that wouldn't make much of an effect anyway since I think it's P/NP and only an hour a week.

On the difficult side, but doable.

Ehh I think you have to look a little beyond the units here. Chem 1AL, while only 1 unit, is three hours worth of lab, after which you will be physically and mentally exhausted. Not to mention the tedious write-ups that will suck up a lot of time. I would also hesitate about the upper-dive English class your very first semester - even AC classes, at their best, still require a ton of reading (especially an english class, and it may be boring). Really observe why you feel you’re ready for 53 - I hear 1B is challenging for those with 5s all around the AP math world, but depending on your background, idk.

Again, you have time to get through things - I’d put my priority on 1-2 prerequisite courses (such as chem 1a), then add a breadth. If I’m taking a lab course I try not to take more than one other course of 4 units. I only took 13 units my 1st semester and got a 4.0, because I planned it very carefully and didn’t overload myself.

So do you recommend I drop, say, English?

Yeah, that’d be my first choice, or CompSci depending how much you need it.

You’re a CS major completing premed requirements, right? You can always push chem back a semester as well.
