How is it gonna affect your choices, finances, and your future plans?

I'm still applying to need blind colleges.

I have to say that its giving me some worries. Ah well, we can but hope

very badly I think. A lot more americans are going to apply for financial aid, and this will affect the amount available for intl.

And chlormel, I hate to tell you this, but there is no such thing as a need blind college. Its an unsaid but true fact. To get aid, you need to be very very good, or else they just wont give it.

^ Well, HYPMD+AWS are need-blind, but then to actually get into them as an international is probably just as hard (if not harder) than getting into schools of a similar caliber (Stanford, etc...) when you ask for financial aid.

nope i would disagree there. If u ask for aid at stanford it would be definitely tougher. the toughness would move on from "as difficult as winning the international astronomy olympiad" tough to "I have no bloody hope in hell" kind of tough.

This could be the hierarchy:

Getting into great non -need blind with aid (UPenn, Stanford) > getting into need blind with aid (HYP) > getting into need blind (since they are TOUGH to get in) without aid> get into non need blind without aid (stanford)

And getting into stanford without aid is tough enough so... there we are boys and girls

the bad thing for those already in college is that the freakin US currency is rising in value.. so everything in the states becomes much more expensive.. and we have to pay more for everything than say a month ago

hahaha in india its now Rs50 per dollar from Rs 39 per dollar almost a year ago

How will the crisis affect intls who don't need aid?

Internationals need not worry about the financial turmoil. In fact it's hardly being discuss in the international board nor you'll find a thread about it's effect on international student financial aid. If you go to the financial aid message board above, domestic students are worried as hell. Internationals are confident that even with financial armaggedon on the horizon, the bulk of the financial aid especially the merit will be reserve for them. Most internationals are from well to do families and most pay their own tuition. So no it doesnt effect them. While all domestic students think community college, that makes HYPS all more appealing to international students.

So you don't think the recent shift in currency exchange rates affects international students? I think having to pay up to 30% more of your home currency to get the same amount of USD would be very noticeable to all international students except the ones who are on full aid or super rich.

Just wait until the next tuition bills are due...

I pity the ones who do not need aid from my country cos the dollar rate has super super risen!

So would internationals not seeking aid be at an advantage, then?

Internationals not seeking aid are always at an advantage, especially if you're applying to schools that aren't need-blind.

It is my feeling that this year there will be a percentage increase in the number of internationals getting enrolled in top and mid level universities, especially those who do not ask for finaid. the universities have never needed those cash cows as much as they do now.
