How is this possible?!

One of my classmates got waitlisted at Dartmouth with 3.6 GPA, 1850 SAT, SAT subject tests in low 600s and one of them in the 400s. And none of his recommendations were taken from teachers of core academic subjects. Once he even got a suspension. In addition, his EC's weren't on the great side either. Except founding and leading a popular community service club, his EC's were pretty ordinary compared to others. And I see other talented people, academically and socially, getting rejections from these ivies. How is this possible?

Yeah thats kinda weird.. again the whole ivy league admissions process is random. I was personally accepted to Harvard but rejected by Dartmouth.

Hey, but still, it doesn't get this random.

I'm sort of furious... because I think it is way too unfair for those who actually deserve the place in admissions.

Easy - he's lying.

Apparently, this guy with a <1700 SAT and <3.6 UW GPA (and crapy ECs, imo) got in this year, too. "ish" happens, I guess... :/

no one here (except for the OP, maybe) has seen his/her application-you can't decide whether or not he "deserved" a place in a particular college. actually, no one "deserves" a place in college...

honestly i'd take whatever this person posts with a grain of salt. just skimming over their previous posts they evidently lied about their sat's/sat2's in different chances threads (with the score going down each time). anyway, admissions is random and takes into account several factors, so there's no way to judge the situation without true firsthand knowledge

^ hey mets, i guess you're one of those forum peeps who enjoy looking through other's profiles and histories. for your information, there are some differences regarding junior expectations and senior results. and lying about someone else's stats and condemning them definitely isn't a good time pass, either for me or for you.

Haha let's see. September 2007 (as a senior): "SAT I: 2250 SAT II: 750 - Math IC, 720 - Math IIC, 760 - World History. (I plan on take literature in Nov)"

March 2008: "SAT I - 2000 total SAT II - Math IIC: 680, Literature: 650, Chemistry: 680 -_-"

Later on in March 2008... : "SAT - 1980 SAT II - match iic 680, literature 630"

It's not a big deal, just go home

Waitlist really means nothing. I'm sorry to all those waitlist hopefuls, but I really don't expect many people to be pulled off the waitlist. I wouldn't be surprised if no one gets off the waitlist again.

lol mets, you seriously need to get a life. poor guy, how desperate are you?

Why is this going on in the Dartmouth forum? Chill out, por favor.

gotta agree with cheeky. got into columbia, rejected by dartmouth

Tuft's syndrome? Just throwing it out there.

It's possible he was a major legacy with many family members attending. In those cases a wait listing is a polite rejection.

Don't worry about other people. It will make you miserable.

CanuckBreakwater - are you kidding?

MythMom is very wise.

He's got no legacy or any other "hook" that'll get him in. But he said that he'll decline the offer of admission even if he's pulled off the waitlist, which kind of puts doubt on his honesty in the first place. Anyways, I decided to pull him off my mind, as MythMom has said. It is odd, but you can't do anything about it.

So where is he allegedly going instead?
