Academically, Chicago is on par with the Ivies, and most informed people know it. Consequently, career prospects at Wall Street companies (especially if you've majored in Math or Economics) are excellent, and many students are recruited.

Prestige perhaps amongst average people but that is simply perception and to a certain degree ignorance. Who do you know (that is not a students in the college search process) that knows actual statistics for more than some 10 schools...

I'd argue that Chicago holds even more regard than Cornell...but hey, what do I know, I'm biased. Varying degrees of prestige is not why you should choose a college, as ultimately, you're going to have to live there. Choose a college based on its QUALITY.

guys thanks for your replies...
sahbara... but HYP students say that it's an OBVIOUS FACT that many "wall street" companies actually choose their people from HYP.
what do you guys think about it???

turn the HYP argument around: many from Chicago (or Stanford) don't want to live in NYC, it's a self-selection process that gets more HYP types to NY. But, anyone in business or academia knows that UofC is at least equal to those schools in rigor and academics. Indeed, given that H & S & P have rampant grade inflation where everyone graduates with honors.....hmmmm

depends on who you're asking for "honor" from. if you want to pull average joe off the street of anywhere, usa, you're right, he'll probably recognize harvard, princeton, and yale, and scratch his head trying to think of whether he's heard of chicago before.

but average joe isn't doing the hiring on wall street or for any big firm. the people working for these firms know the quality of a chicago education; they know that chicago has one of the top economics programs in the country (and as a whole, is an amazing school.) those are the people writing your paycheck. these are the people who count, in my opinion.

but if you believe that HYP is more prestigious and you believe that is a "fact," then don't come to U of C.

use the search function. do some of your own research. chicago is on par academically to all the ivy league schools. chicago has one of the higher percentage of students going onto to professional/graduate schools. chicago is known to be an incredibly hard school, but an incredibly intellectual environment to secure a solid knowledge base. and i think that's what distinguishes university of chicago students.

I completely agree with twinlkle twinkle. The UofC will provide you with an fufilling academic experience. If you are quirky, passionate, and can identify with the word intellectual go to Chicago. If your name is Joe, go to HPYS
