i know it is wierd that i am asking this question, but my cousin is wondering if uga is a good college, and if it is better than tech. any comments to help her??

yello, is anybody there

Good, yes. Better than Tech, no.

UGA is a great school, one of the better state schools and one of the best universities in the South. But I wouldn't say in terms of academic prestige it's quite on par with Tech. Remember how I said that a Tech degree is highly respected because it's been earned with so much effort and discipline? A UGA degree is respected but I would say NOT particularily close to the level a Tech degree is.

Tech and UGA have a big rivalry between each other, mostly athletic and not academic.

UGA is known for having a very, very good social scene-- better than Tech's, certainly. The town of Athens is often hailed as the perfect college town. It's a very beautiful school, with good facilities. Lots of big drinkers, I should note. Friends and classmates who did campus tours there over the past two years would share stories with us about random drunk students they encountered... just from taking tours around campus, in the middle of the day. I'm not saying that they're all drunks or something. But it has a pretty darn good party image, and football is HUGE with UGA people.

UGA has a very excellent journalism school, and in general is a respected place of learning in the South-- much more highly respected among Southerners than U of Alabama etc. But it's not up there with Tech.

I have more friends going to Tech this fall than UGA by far.

EY im from cali but im reppin ATL to the fullest. What im sayin is that there is no place like ATL and GA. Kind people, BEAUTIFUL women, good schools, good food, good housing.
Evere since I been to ATL i never wanted to come back to cali. WHo wants to live in polluted cali anyways!?

headed south:
i live in atlanta, and can't wait to visit cali again, and hopefully go to college there. lol

Uga doesn't compare to tech IMO

GATechboy

UGA is a really good school!! It's not on the same level as Tech, but it's really good state school. I'm applying to UGA this fall, hopefully I'll get in!

You basically just have search for it and do your homework and decide if it's right for you!

Chia06

P.S.
GAtechboy where are you going to school?? Because I remember you were having a tough time trying to decide between Tech & Morehouse.

I would go to UGA over Tech in a heartbeat. So many people choose UGA over Tech. UGA has a better social life, strong academics, and a better college community. Tech is really dreary and full of nerds. There are some normal people there, but to meet them you have to join a fraternity.

I have spent my fair share of time in Atlanta and Athens. Atlanta is one of my favorite cities ever. There's so many cool neighborhoods(Little Five Points, Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead, Virginia Highlands, etc). Atlanta is so amazing. I love it and want to live there when I graduate from college. Tech is near Midtown and has a good location, but it seems more insular than most city schools and most of the students stay on campus or go home on the weekends.

UGA has much more going on than Tech. Athens is such a cool town. You will never have a dull moment in Athens. There's so many great restaurants that have really cheap prices in Athens. There's tons of bars, too, where bands love to play. Athens is just so Bohemian feeling, and has every type of person(gays, preps, artsy people, etc).

UGA also beats Tech in many fields. If your cousin wants to be an engineer of architect, then Tech is a no-brainer. But if your cousin wants to do something relating to liberal arts, law, political science, biology, etc., then UGA wins. The Terry College of business is very competitive and well respected. I would consider it to be about equal to Tech.

Again, both are great schools and I know people who love both. UGA is tough academically, but if you put effort into your studies, you will graduate. The same can't be said about Tech. I know sooooo many people that have gone to Tech for some fancy sounding engineering degree(biomedical engineering for example) and have quickly switched to the token "easy" major at Tech: Industrial Management.

chia, actually, i have decided. i am going to tech. i spent a week on campus going to classes and living the tech life. honestly, i do not know what the hell people are talking about when they say tech is dreary. i had a blast. and if you dont like tech, there is the au center if you are black, and ga state. man!!

GT is great. Don't get your panties in a wad. I'm not going to UGA or anything I am just giving my opinion. Tech isn't horrible or anything, but it IS dreary. I mean c'mon! The dorms are like dungeons and the architecture is just very blaaaahh.

whats so dreary about that pic. i think its great

There is hardly any green space. Even the president's home is ugly. The buildings are that ugly brick and I just don't really feel like going into detail. Have fun at Tech. You'll have fun. Just don't flunk out like a lot of people.

Most definitely. Atl Born and Raised. GaTech is an easy place to flunk out. And yes, the architecture is not appealing--its no Duke (lol I couldn't resist).

Anyway, you will have a good time. Atl has a great nightlife, and if you stay on top of your studies, you will be able to take it in.

On the whole UGA probably is slightly below GA Tech on the whole. However, for top students I believe UGA has a superior honors program and even better scholarships. Serious academics will definitely find plenty of company and tons of oppertunities for study abroad, research, etc. Its engineering programs and compsci stuff and are probably not up to par with Tech's but the life sciences are very strong with a myriad of centers and institutes. In rest of the liberal arts, UGA is far above Tech in most respects. Yes there's a lot of drinking, but there's also a good number of nondrinkers too.

Thus GATechboy, if your sister is looking for compsci or engineering then I bet she would be happier at Tech. If she wants to do some serious academics in any other subject or just wants a fun social life, then I would wholeheartedly recommend UGA.

hold on, i just heard that tech's business program is ahead of terry's school of business. check the 2006 grad school rankings

The best b-school in GA is Goizueta, Emory University.
