How is UMD on OoS Merit Scholarships?

How is UMD- CP in terms of merit scholarships? Do they typically give any money if you have decent stats or not?

ACT 34, SAT 1420 (CR+MA) / 2020 (total), GPA 4.4 (W) / 3.7 (UW)
Girl majoring in Bioengineering from OoS (NC)
NHS, other usual ECs and volunteer work

I've visited the school and love it but they don't seem as generous in scholarship money as some other schools, but I'm hoping I'm wrong.

Maryland is not particularly generous with merit scholarships. The tuition rate increases were frozen by the University System of Maryland Board of Regents for 4 years for in-state and went up for OOS students. Due to combination of relative low tuition and good programs UMD has rated high as a best value university (Forbes, among others.) There is definitely merit money available, but more for the very top students and for certain majors and underrepresented minorities.

You should definitely apply and see what offer they give you.

It’s likely that the SATs and grades are not quite high enough for the Banneker Key (full ride). That said, I would think that you’re likely to get offered a merit scholarship (President’s, etc.), but you need to be realistic in terms of cost…it will make a dent in the cost, but certainly won’t be close to NC’s in-state options.

Every year there are people who are so disappointed that they end up not being able to attend because even though they are accepted, the cost is still prohibitive for OOS students. If you are considering private schools or otherwise have the funds, I’d heartily recommend the school (as a mom of 2 NC daughters who had extremely successful college careers there).

My older child (college class of 2016) had a little lower weighted gpa and a little higher SAT score. We are in-state and they offered him about 4500 a year for first two years. A friend’s daughter with similar stats received same offer. Good luck.

Thanks all…very helpful. 1214mom- those figures sound quite good considering instate tuition as well. Wouldn’t make a big dent for OoS but every bit helps.

Daughter sent in her application today so we’ll see. She’s applying to in-state schools too (NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill) but those are both literally 20 minutes from our house and she wants to “go away” to school  so those are her last choices- even with UNC-Chapel Hill being a very good school- and husband is alumni. She also has legacies at UMD and we have a lot of family around there so while cost is a consideration- especially since we already have 1 in college- she’ll make 2, it’s not our entire decision-maker either.

You’re right… It was a pretty good deal. Unfortunately, my son didn’t chose to go to UMD. It’s my younger son’s first choice, so there is still hope.

1214mom: I am OOS and looking UMD and UNC. My brother goes to UMD and had comparable stats as your child and gets about $13,000/yr in scholarships

bigbooklover- that is encouraging. UMD is one of my daughter’s first choices, so hopefully they’ll look more at her 34 ACT and less at the 1420/2020 SAT.

My brother only submitted ACT scores, my other brother did the same and that is what I am doing.

An admissions counselor visited my school, and he said that if you send both SAT and ACT scores, they convert the ACT to SAT and use the higher score between the two. So they do only use the higher score between the ACT and SAT.

Do you think that UMD will really wait until mid March to release merit offerings? Has anyone heard anything? IT’s hard to wait when you’ve heard from other schools.

I think it will be end of this month…just like last year.

Thanks Terpmom!

^ that’s when they came out last year. I am just assuming it will be the same this year. I hope I’m right and you get great news!

UMD has its way of doing things, and they have been doing them that way for years. They are not likely to change. They’re a state institution, and if it ain’t broke they aren’t going to change it no matter how many parents and school counselors holler.

And what is that way jkeil911? This is our 1st go around…

well, for instance, UMD opens its admissions doors really early and gives students until November 1st to apply for Priority Application. Then they wait until the last week of January to make a batch decision. Other large state schools might do a rolling admissions to which they respond as the applications come in. I’ve heard guidance counselors complain about UMD’s method and express frustration at UMD’s rigidity. But, hey, it must work for them or they wouldn’t do it. It’s just tough on the kids of Maryland, esp. those who are counting on UMD as their safety and maybe their first letter of admission. No big deal, mahn, or even much to complain about. Good school and very strong in some areas.

I thought you were referring to their merit scholarship awards. I’m hoping to hear sooner rather than later because my daughter is anxious to accept admission but we’d like to hear all the merit awards first. I’m doubtful umd will offer anything based on what I’ve heard though.

My D was accepted OOS, and into Honors College, but frankly we’re not hopeful for much/any merit. State schools tend to not muster much merit aid. She’s hopeful however because it may tip the scales for her if UMD comes through, and it doesn’t have to be full or even half. Fingers crossed.

I didn’t think the state schools gave anything and was shocked when penn state and udel offered merit $. Of course, umd is her first choice and they’ll probably give 0!
