How is undergrad Finance at Stern?

Hey everyone,

I have 1 day to truly decide my future school. I always wanted to attend Stern with a concentration in marketing but after finding out that Stern’s marketing program is not that strong. Naturally, I’m looking in more to the Finance concentration because of its reputation at Stern. My ultimate question is, how is Stern’s undergrad Finance program related to Economics? I did not typically enjoy econ too much because of its emphasis on theory and some of the graphs just did not seem to make sense to m. I know it’s typical for a business major to complete macro/micro requirements but is there a lot of econ incorporated into finance? What would my strengths have to be to truly succeed in finace? Thank you.

*sorry for silly grammatical errors; typed this post in a hurry

From my understanding, to succeed in finance you have to be particularly adept at math and critical thinking/analysis. Econ at Stern is also related to math and calc, but is more concepts based.

I hope the 1 day wasn’t literal, in which case this reply is too late. Long answer short, if you like marketing then pursue marketing, don’t change your career plans simply because of the known exit opportunities or level of acknowledgement that an institution might have in another field.

Business in general at Stern is strong, and a large part of that is due to its proximity to companies that give you the opportunity to intern year round as opposed to only during the summers. This holds just as strongly for marketing as it does for finance.

Economics is tied to finance in varying degrees in the professional world but not necessarily in your academic coursework depending on what track you take. You could technically complete a concentration in finance without ever taking an economics course at Stern (I believe under the new curriculum).

FYI I was a finance/econ major that switched econ to management and ended up in a career in digital marketing. So…yea

@AoDay How math intensive is Stern in general? For example, as a finance major, does the math get very difficult? or is it manageable if your decently strong in mathematics?

Stern Marketing program is actually pretty strong - marketing is huge in New York obviously a lot of ad agencies and corporations are headquartered in NYC so supplementing your coursework with Marketing internships during the year is not that hard to do. I’ve seen tons of job posts regarding marketing position. There is definitely more of an interest towards Finance but there are lot of opportunities in marketing as well.

You would actually have a much easier time doing Marketing at Stern relative to another school just because there are less people interested in pursuing that line of work so it would be much easier to stand out.

That’s very good to know actually @qwertyzxc do you happen to know undergrad marketing majors at stern?

@SternBusiness The math isn’t that difficult and any knowledge beyond calculus I isn’t really needed for a finance major.

@AoDay Wow, very interesting. For some reason, my perception of Stern was always of an extreme focus on mathematics. Thanks
