How is the University of Nevada, Reno? I'm from Southern Cali, and I'm interested in learning more about it. Does anyone go there or know about it? Thanks!

UN-R is worse than many Calif univerisities. If you get into a good UC or CSU, that will be better than UN-R.

Why are you interested in UN-R.

Well with my grades and lack of EC’s etc, I don’t have a chance at the UC’s or the competitive CSU’s I don’t think… The only CSU I have a chance at getting into is Northridge because I’m in its service area; but it doesn’t appeal to me at all.

UN-R looks like a beautiful campus and I love the proximity to all the outdoorsy activities. Plus I was looking for a change of scenery out of southern california. There are other various things that attract me about it, but I don’t see what’s wrong with it.

Could anyone elaborate what it lacks in? The only thing I know of is the struggling UN system. Thanks!

What is your GPA and what are your test scores?

Are your parents willing to pay the high out of state costs for UN-R?

Nevada has a terrible educational system and you may be disappointed in the academic ability of your peers - or maybe not! I see no reason to go to college in Reno.

I can see why you are looking at UN-R since you are from CA and UN-R is part of the WUE network of colleges – not full OOS tuition so that is a cost savings. I hope you can get some info from current students or alumni – those who have actually been on the campus and attended the classes.

I don’t know a thing about UN-R, but I wouldn’t just assume it’s high-cost. UN-R shows in-state tuition of about $6,500 and OOS tuition of just under $20K. In-state “fees” at some of the UCs are now around $14K, a difference of just $6K or so; some applicants will find that difference affordable. Also, California residents can apply through the WUE program for a tuition reduction at UN-R to 150% of the in-state rate, bringing UN-R to about $10K, which is less than the cost of a UC. Which may be why around 17% of UN-R’s freshmen in 2010 come from California. The WUE tuition reduction is apparently not automatic, however.

High is relative. For some, paying $20k for tuition for an OOS school that is of much lower quality than a UC would not be attractive. It could also be argued that UN-R is of lower quality than many/most of the CSUs. For that additional reason, paying OOS or WUE rates for UN-R would not be attractive.

And, students who have high need will often find that WUE or OOS schools are not affordable since their aid is usually limited to federal aid. Also, most WUE schools will not let you have a merit scholarship and the WUE rates.

WUE rates seem to be most attractive to those who can pay the costs. Since the OOS WUE students typically will not qualify for any of the state aid from their home state or their WUE state, federal aid is often the only aid available to them.

However, if the parents are willing to pay any and all costs for UN-R then great.

I personally think you should have applied for the UCs and CSUs. Huge cost savings and better education than U of N- Reno.

Either of these options would likely be better than going to Nevada.

1)Go to a CC and transfer
2)CSU or UC

Go to the CSU website. Meet their GPA/test standards and you’re in.
