How is UT-Austin campus?

I'm an international student planning to apply to ut Austin, but from what I saw in videos and images (also Google street view) the campus is not that beautiful, and the constructions (dorms, halls, classrooms, libraries) are old... I can't visit because I'm from Brazil. What can actual students say about the campus? And also, how big is it? (compare with some other Universities please).

I am a senior so I visited many campuses. One of them was UT- Austin since I was accepted to the university. UT was the first school I visited and I liked it. I’m just not a fan of the hot weather since I have a hard time focusing in the blazing heat. But the campus was pretty nice; I liked the way the buildings look but I know my friend who went down there with me really didn’t like it much. But the campus was decent and Austin is nice. However, after that I visited UW Madison and UMich. I found UMich and UW Madison a lot better, especially UW Madison. The campus was a lot nicer and my friend felt the same way. So then I visited UT Austin again and didn’t find it so nice since it was competing with the other two universities when it came to looks!

Austin makes up for anything the UT campus might be lacking. I think the UT campus is beautiful in it’s very own way. It might not be Duke, Princeton or University of Chicago, but it’s beautiful nonetheless.

Franko is right. Take into consideration the city it’s located in. Although, Duke and Princeton may “look” better, Austin is a lot better than Durham and Princeton NJ. Austin, just as Ann- Arbor and Madison, is a lot more exciting. Also, what are you planning on studying? Give us the info so maybe we can give you some other potential universities.

Yeah, Madison is the other great University that I was looking forward, and I was SO amazed by it… But between uw Madison and ut Austin what is the best choice? Academically, SOCIALLY, the weather, people… For Business School… Thanks for answering btw :)

Nice! UW Madison is where I will be next fall. I am studying Biology so UW madison automatically ranked higher than UMich and UT Austin. However, I know for business UT Austin is higher especially in Accounting. But what type of Business are you planning to study? I know UW Madison has some really high programs composed in the Business school. As for overall academics they are pretty much neck and neck, with many rankings including ARWU and USNWR giving UW the slight edge. However, it is slight (few rankings above) where it shouldn’t even matter. As for weather, Madison is very cold where as UT Austin is really warm. Coming from Brazil im guessing you will prefer UT’s weather. Also, it snows a lot up in Madison. But, i was fond of the campus and loved the whole lake setting that I didn’t care about the weather. Socially both schools are thriving; UW Madison and UT Austin are ranked top party schools; UW Madison usually beats UT Austin in this ranking as well, but slightly. As for people both schools have their fair amount of good people and bad people. lol

Great man
I pretend to do business management, and even tho I am from Brazil, the city I live in is VERY HOT in the summer and very cold in the winter (0 Celsius, I don’t know how much this is in fahrenheit). Also, I think that snow is going to be an awesome new experience, because I have never seen it before, never. Also, I have read that Wisconsin have a bit bigger dorms and it is cheaper…
Regarding I am an international student, are they opened for diversity (easy to get in) or do they evaluate international students the same way as they do for American students (hard to get in)?
:)

haha sounds great! and yea UW Madison is a great university with a lot of prestige here and over seas. To me weather isn’t a big deal but it comes down to you. The dorms at UW Madison are very nice and give the classical college dorm feel and the modern feel you can say. You can choose to live in the city dorm (Southeast) or the Lakeshore dorms (more private and quiet). I will be living in Sellery Hall my first year; Sellery has the distinction of being names a top Party dorm: [First Annual Dormy Awards & the Launch of DormSplash.com! | CampusSplash - College News and Tips.](http://blog.campussplash.com/annual-dormy-awards-launch-of-dormsplash-a-dorm-review-website/)

If you don’t want to party, Lakeshore is perfect for you. Liz Waters in Lakeshore is amazing! Right next to the lakes and the rooms are very spacious! The dorms here are really nice! As for diversity, every American University is. Getting in is getting harder: 3.6-3.85 GPA and decent SAT’s (1800- 2000). However, if you don’t fit these standards don’t let it discourage you! They do a holistic review.

Lol man I have been researching the dorms these days and also chose sellery! I’m still in my freshman high school year in brasil (that would be the sophomore year in USA) so I have plenty of time to study and get good grades, extracurricular activities etc. What other kind of things would be important or would help me getting into an American University such as Wisconsin? Also man, we don’t have the so called ap classes here at Brazil :frowning:
I’m curious about something… Here we HAVE to study biology, chemistry, physics, sociology, philosophy etc during the three years of high school here, are these classes also optional in the us? We get into some pretty advanced (and hard) concepts… This happens because in Brazil we don’t have a test like sat that is just cr, writing and basic math, we have the “vestibular”, that is a HUGE test with ALL subjects from first grade till the last high school year. Also, it is VERY competitive, with some vestibulares with more than 5000 people doing the test (this for the brazillian universities tho, for American ones we do the toefl and sat). It is very (very) hard to get only A’s in all subjects, and in the unweighted gpa this can be a problem… Btw…

Definitely keep those grades up, start studying for SAT’s and stuff, and do as much extra curriculars as you can! Here we the students along with the Guidance Counselor make our schedule (at least in my school). To graduate HS we must take 3 years of Math, 4 years of English, 3 years of the sciences, etc. I’m not sure about getting in and what is necessary to even apply. You should definitely call the UW undergraduate admissions and talk to a representative and see what he/she says.

Yeah I’ve already bought the blue book for the sat
Actually, I did an sat without studying for it (the financial aid company guy said to do so, anyways) and I took 1400… I’ve already read some guides and everyday I receive sat questions in my email!
Any kind of extracurricular is ok? I mean, I play lots of instruments well, have played for 3 years in a band, 2 in my church, I go to the youth group. The probably my best extracurricular activity is that I do the ttu high school program, in which VERY FEW student of my city have been selected to do, so I take some American classes that we don’t have in Brazil, such as politics, economy, us history, speech and many other subjects, so in the end of my high school I will have also an American certificate (which as I have already said very few people from my city will have). Any other suggestions?
I know I have a lot to improve, but I think I can do it :)

I can not give you specifics, since UW Madison is open to everything and receives many diverse applications. However, I can give you info on what extra curriculars I did. I was a member of the NHS at my school, I was a 3 year Varsity wrestling captain. I have won many tournament in my state. I was also on the Track team. Besides that, I was President for both the Green Club and Math Club at my school. I was also a part of a program that allowed me to take college classes. I also attended a program with some of the best students in my state and I received the top Physics student award. Besides that UW Madison also takes teacher recoomendations; I got three: one from my Biology teacher, one from my AP Chemistry teacher, and the other from my wrestling coach. Make sure you keep ties with your teachers. You will need their help later. Continue with the SAT studying! Try to hit the 2000’s to be considered a really strong applicant. If you don’t, its not the end of the world but it ill definitely make you a better candidate.

Thanks
This is the bad part of Brazil, there aren’t students organizations, the sports are very strict to who start early, like 6 years, and that’s not my case. Also there aren’t presidents of math or anything like that… S

haha i understand. If that’s the case call the universities your interested in and see what they say. I’m sure they will be willing to help

Also, sport for men here is like 85 % soccer, and it is EXTREMELY competitive (yeah, this stereotype is true), and even most the best players can’t get to play in big teams and stadual championships. So sports for me is almost impossible to get any relevant position… The only wrestlers that go into any kind of championship are those that train in private fighting schools for like 4 years AT LEAST. sorry for my English in this publication, I’m just typing fast and my cell phone mix everything lol

Its fine. Well like i said before give the undergraduate admissions a call at all the universities your interested in. They will be a big help. And yea I know Brazil and how big they are when it comes to soccer. Brazil is one of the best Soccer teams in the world. See what you can do. Are there any sports available? While looking for a possible sport load up on the volunteering and keep your grades up along with the SAT studying.

OK, thanks man, really, thanks
I’ll just go sleep because tomorrow I have to wake up 6 in the morning to to just get out of the school 6.30 on the afternoon… Anyway, thanks for helping me
See ya

I’ve got another question. If I practiced a sport for a long time but don’t practice it anymore, does it count? Also, if I start playing another sport but don’t get to the competitive level, does it count too? :s

lihurnirds

0 C is about 32 F
For mental calculations from F to C subtract 30 from F and divide by 2, you’ll get approximate C.

0 C is NOT COLD. It happens in Texas quite often because it’s subtropical zone, not tropical.

Cold winter is something like -30 C.

LOL everybody here swears that it is too cold! I think it is just that we brazillians are accustomed to the hot weather. But I am not very concerned about the weather, as I said before I would like to know how is snow like and live some cold days (because if 0 Celsius is not cold, I don’t know what is) :)
