I was wondering a) how is Yale at engineering and b) will applying to engineering boost or decrease your chance of acceptance to Yale? Any comments would be appreciated.

Yale is obviously extraordinary in every department and you can receive a top-notch education in any major at the university (i.e. you will be able to go on to the best grad schools, find top jobs, etc).

That said, Yale is not known for its engineering program, even though it recently significantly increased funding to the sciences. Yale's curriculum is about breadth in the humanities, languages, sciences etc -- and it consequently may be deemed weaker in the engineering field than "engineering schools" like MIT, Stanford, and Olin. If you really want to go to a college just for engineering (and to be immediately recognized in that field when you exit college), you should probably go to a school like that. If you want to go to college for a culture, pure intellectualism, etc, Yale is better. Even though Yale may not be immediately recognized for its engineering, you can certainly receive a fabulous education in engineering there.

I believe that all applicants are looked at equally in the same pool. Picking engineering may indicate your high school academic interests -- but it is not going to make Yale easier to get into.

^^That was very well put and accurate. I don't think more comments need to be made.

The prestige isn't that big of a deal i would become a patent attorney and not an actually engineer. But does it help in admission to major in engineering? And also i only got a 650 in math, but i think i could compensate with a 700+ in math SAT 2, would my low math SAT hurt if i apply to engineering?

Your choice of a major doesn't help. They're all looked at equally like yalie343 said.

Yes, your low math would probably hurt you. Engineering majors average math scores are 780-800 and most of the applicants have an SAT math IIC score of 780-800 also.

But like yalie said, you should apply elsewhere if you want to major in engineering.

Dbate, you're math score alone won't hurt your chances at an acceptance but it sure won't help it given the extremely competitive nature of admissions to Yale. Get a really high Math 2 score and you should be fine, assuming the rest of your test scores are high. You would be amazed to know how many students don't score 750+ on the SAT at Yale. Yale is not all about numbers. Good luck.
