How is your Duke financial aid decision?

Did they give you enough money? Too little? Personally I expected a little more.. how does Duke compare to other schools (of similar high caliber) in terms of financial aid?

I got a generous offer from Duke that met all of my Estimated Family Contribution. I'm extremely grateful; can't ask for any more. What did you expect?

I got 5,500 in a Stafford loan and that's it..kinda expect though since my EFC is 80k+..

Yeah I pretty much can't afford to go.

Mine was almost exactly what I predicted (EFC=~$15,000), which is pretty damn generous, because they covered almost $40,000 in need-based grants. Unfortunately, my parents still can't figure out whether they can afford it or not....

Anyway, MAJOR props to Duke for being so quick about FinAid!!

Doesn't Duke replace all loans with grants/scholarships if your family makes less than 60k per year? I'm a bit confused as to why I have loans in my finaid package.

My family's fafsa efc is 20000$, however Duke calculated it was 40000$. Maybe error in paperwork, since there are no significant additional assets reported in CSS that werent present in the FAFSA.

^ That makes no sense! haha
The CSS EFC is almost always lower than the FAFSA EFC because it accounts for MORE thigns, like private school tuition, family size, etc.

E.G. My FAFSA EFC was around $25,000. My Duke EFC is $15,000

My Duke EFC was higher than my FAFSA one, but only by around $2,000.

I got a $16,000 "Duke University Scholarship"

Does anyone have any information about what exactly that is? (Renewed every year, etc).

The Duke university Scholarship is a need based grant that is part of your financial aid package. You will not have to repay it, but it is not a merit scholarship. The definitions are in the materials you received.

Thanks, you are absolutely right.

I was just a bit surprised because I got more money then WashU and now Duke costs pretty much the same as my state school UoI (without loans taken into consideration).

The real question is how good Duke is in maintaining FA over 4 years. (I've heard of some schools who give quite a bit of FA to start out with and then scale it back over 4 years).

My FAFSA EFC was around 2.8k, but Duke is expecting $0 from my family :)

anybody get info about merit scholarships?

today, in the email i got a letter saying they didn't have all the materials (IDOC) although IDOC was made available 3/23...

did you all get ur notices via an attachment to an email?

^ the financial aid page says all merit finalists have been notified.

i have a question, is the cost of books included in the tuitions and fees?

I think it's accounted for in the "other expenses"

Can somebody tell me if this is a mistake? my FAFSA EFC is 2850, but my Duke EFC is 25,000 (...). I really want to go to duke, but this price is impossible for my family (my JHU EFC is only 8k, and other UC's are even lower). Am i just expecting too much, or should I make a call to the finaid office?

Definitely make a call. There more likely than not has been some mistake.

How are you finding out about your financial aid decision - is it online? Please assist me in my idiocy and ignorance, thank you.

^yes it's online.
