I asked the school if there are any school related banks and the person told me that you can use your unc one card in wachovia bank atm machines (is it true that this bank's machines are on campus?) and that the school works closely with this bank. I've never lived in the us and i don't know about american banks....has anybody who uses (or used) wachovia bank find it to be a competent bank? i've heard that there are a lot of citibank atms in america...maybe i should get an acount from them? would it be most practical to open an wachovia bank acount?

and just a basic question, if there is a atm from wachovia bank and i use some other bank's card to get some money, do i have to pay interest?

and as a survey for students....if youre a unc student, what bank will you be using or what are you using now?

could you explain what kind of advantage that is in easier english (as if you would talk to a 2nd grader? i have absolutely no idea about banks and accounts and such…

I am not a fan of wachovia, but I keep an account with them so I have easy access to my money during the school year. I have my other bank account linked up with my wachovia account so I can transfer funds.

@gkgkgozldaht: basically, there are no fees associated with keeping an account at Wachovia if you are a student…hence the “free” part… so you might as well get one if you are unsure, IMO…

UNC banks with Wachovia. If you are getting any scholarship money it makes things much easier and far less hassled when cashing or depositing checks etc.

Although it probably doesn’t make any difference, I don’t think that Wachovia is Wachovia anymore – I believe that they were acquired by Wells Fargo. Whatever bank you go with locally, I would suggest that you open a checking account with ING Direct and link it to you local bank account. ING Direct pays you interest on your checking account balance (no minimum), there are no fees, free ATM use, and they offer a lot of other great features. Because ING Direct is internet based, you will need a computer to access your account.

thank you very much. i think it’s quite obvious that I should use wachovia (even if i end up not using it). im from korea by the way, for the person who asked.

oh and by the way, if you open up an account, does your unc onecard become something like a credit card, where you can go to restaurants and just swipe, or is it just a card you can use to take money out of an atm, or can it do both functions??

Yeah, Wachovia was acquired by Wells Fargo late last year/early this year… but I don’t think they’ll be changing their name for a while due to the enormous costs that come with changing all the signs, issuing new debit cards, etc.

Wachovia does have an ATM and walk-in service center in the Pit (the heart of campus), as well as another ATM outside of Rams Head dining hall on South Campus. There is a full branch office nearby on Franklin Street. Plus, as you mention, you can link your Wachovia card with your UNC ID.

Although Wachovia has indeed been acquired by Wells Fargo, these branches and ATMs should still remain under the new name. This is extremely convenient for students and I thus highly recommend Wachovia if you are looking to open a new checking account and will be attending UNC.
