How large are intro chem/phys/orgo lectures?

Someone who's considering Northwestern and Michigan/Berkeley thought NU's 200 people in chem/orgo lectures as too big when I told him. But I don't think it's big when it's compared to those in some public ones. But I need confirmation just to make sure I am not giving false info.

Michigan intro classes have between 150 and 400 students, depending on the professor and the subject. However, once a class has over 80 students it makes no difference. Whether a class has 80 students or 400 students, you are still not going to have the benefits associated with a small class. Most research universities, like Harvard, Stanford, Cornell, Penn, Cal, Michigan, MIT, Northwestern etc... will have classes with over 100 students at the intro levels.

Hi Alexandre,

Thanks for your info. Are those numbers also for intro engineering classes? At NU, the 180-200 is really just for intro sciences (bio/orgo/chem) which are taken by many premeds also. The calculus and basic engineering ones have usually just around 40-50. The biggest is the EA (engineering analysis), I believe, and that has about 70-80. Oh..this person's intended major is some engineering; that's why I ask.

No, I was referring to classes like Psych, Econo, History, Anthro, Chem and Physics. Engineering claases are never over 100 and usually have fewer than 60 students.
