How liberal is Northwestern?

Hi I'm a senior from ct and northwestern's school of education and social policy seems very attractive to me (I want to study policy). Just how liberal is NU? I know most colleges and their students are left leaning but I want to know if it is overtly liberal (like brown or Wesleyan). Im pretty liberal myself but I'm ok with a more centrist college, I'm just curious. Thanks

Page 37, so you don’t have to go sifting through pages of questions.

I’ve found that, while campus on average leans to the left of center, there are a good mix of viewpoints present. Beyond that, everybody for the most part is pretty tolerant of said viewpoints (although whether that’s true enlightened respect for different views or plain apathy is up for debate).

I can’t compare it to other places like Brown or Wesleyan, never having been there, but I think it’s pretty liberal. I’m fairly conservative, and sometimes I feel like I’m one of the only people on campus who is. It gets kind of lonely sometimes because a lot of people just assume that everyone is liberal, so people will do things like bash Republicans, not stopping to think that there might be someone among them who shares many ideas of the Republicans.

But it’s probably this way on most college campuses. My brother, also a conservative, goes to a private Catholic college, and you’d think that would be pretty conservative, but he complains that almost no one else shares his views.

But it’s not to say that there aren’t people of all views here. You’ll find groups that support all kinds of agendas, from College Republicans and the pro-life group to groups that want to advance socialism. But liberal viewpoints are definitely the majority.

Northwestern is liberal but welcomes a diversity of opinions–and not in the annoying way either where somebody says something different just for the sake of being different. Playing devil’s advocate is fine as long as it’s tactfully done. Expressing extreme viewpoints without making a convincing case for them just screams of “attention-seeking” or more likely (on the liberal side) self-pity so you would rarely ever see this.

Also, have you seen this thread?

The majority of the student body leans left but that is not really any different than on most college campuses (I’d say that many are moderates which in the eyes of today’s conservatives are considering bleeding heart liberals).

But there is a pretty vocal conservative minority.
