I’m in 8th grade. I’m a first generation American and my parents came from Africa. My first language is Wolof (a tribal language), and I live with my mom. I play on my school’s volleyball team and I’m trying out for a club volleyball team. I’ve only played on a team this year though. My grades have been going up since 6th grade (I had a C in 6th grade). I had some personal problems which caused me to constantly turn in work late.
I’m a part of my school’s peer helping group which is where a few group of students help out other students when they’re going through something or need people to talk to. I’m not able to do a lot of extracurriculars because my mom works a lot and I’m not able to get rides to places a lot (my mom is too protective to let me carpool). My friend and I are working on getting recycling bins in all of the classrooms in my school. I’m eventually going to take over fully as he’s leaving soon. I’m very interested and passionate about neuroscience. I do a lot of research on it every week. Since I’m also interested in web development I’m currently working on creating a website/blog about neuroscience and I’d like to add to post at least twice a week. I know quite a bit of Korean and can pronounce Korean words and I’m still teaching myself it. I’m a beginner pianist (I take classes at school) and I’d like to continue taking classes if i get in.
I don’t have any extracurriculars that I’ve done for a long time because the ones I did when I was younger I eventually had to stop taking because of financial reasons/my mom was too busy. I have regional awards for my science fair project on bacteria and for a website that I programmed for a technology fair. I didn’t move on to state for both because I didn’t keep track of the due dates for the papers I needed to turn in.
I take all advanced classes along with honors Geometry. I’d say that I have a pretty good relationship with all of my teachers.
In my application I’m going to go more in depth about the problems I had to face that caused me to not get very high grades and not do a lot of extracurriculars but also prove that I overcame it and came out a better person and wish to help others who went through the same thing.
Why are you only considering Exeter?
