Hi CC,
For those of you out there, how long did it take for you to do a double major? How many extra semesters did you have to take? I’m kind of considering going this route, but I’d like to get some input from other people who have done the same thing.
It really depends on the school, and often how closely related the majors are.
At my university, double majors rarely take more than 4 years. But it highly depends on your school, your curriculums, and how many credits you come in with. I’m a math and CS double major with minors in math and cs and I required no extra semesters.
I’ve known people at my university who have also done the following combinations, among others (not an exhaustive list at all), with no extra semesters, some of them also with minors: music and a foreign language, theater and english, theater and bio, music and leadership studies, physics and math, cs and bio, math econ and CS, business and CS, business and math econ, music and business, music and communications, music and chemistry, dance and healthcare studies, dance and business, etc.
Some colleges are the opposite of URichmond and make it difficult to double major. Mine is an example: it was unusual for students to double major, and when they did it often took them 4.5-5 years to finish. Part of that is that the college had a policy that no more than three courses could count towards two majors.
