Just wondering. I've heard of people writing it all in one day, 4 am in the morning to those who've taken weeks writing the first draft. I'm not considering this as an advice thread, but more a curiosity thread.

Any takers?

Any takers?

A few months... I wrote my first draft probably in October. I sent it to a few people on here and they said it could develop into an amazing essay. I worked on it like crazy in December. Finished it probably a day or two before the new year. It paid off! I'm going to the best school in the world!

1st draft: One Day
Final Daft: Few months

For my common app essay, I wrote my 1st draft over a long period-- probably 2-3 weeks =/

I didn't try as hard. It was still good, though.

Today, I sat down at 1:05PM, as I woke up at 12:45PM, and started to write my commonapp essay. Now its about 11:00PM and I think I have finished the first draft.

So, in short, one day? I think if you can't crank out the main gist of your essay in a single sitting, you will lose a lot of the meaning, emotions, and power.

Rosh420, which school did you get into?

Like 5 months. I had it proofread by ALL my past English teachers, maybe like two tutors, my 3 best friends, consultant, and both my GCs. HAHA

(oh by the way, I have A TON of friends who wrote their essays within like one day and worked out extremely good as well. Essays are one of those, all the 17/18 yr olds write the same things, they are all boring. It will rarely make a difference UNLESS it is super super super super good. )

It took me around 2 hours for a first draft.

i played with the idea for about a week in my head before i thought of an intro that i liked. once i started writing, it took me 25 minutes for 800 words. i'm still working on the final draft, and i will probably work on it for a couple months (i like playing with things in my head over a long time).

I let the ideas roll around in my head for awhile, and once I've thought out a good one, I write the first draft in about an hour. The it rolls around in my head some more, and I'll go back and edit and have others proofread for a couple months.

Pretty much the same as MBP. :)

Well...considering the fact that I did my essays last minute.....4 hours.

I only applied to one school (Eugene Lang), and I wrote each of my essays in two drafts a week before the deadline. The two long ones took about 6 hours each (total). The two short essays took 3 hours each.

So I guess it doesn't start to hurt now, eh?

I wrote my first paragraph at like 4 am and then I got tired. Haha, strange...being inspired so late in the morning.

About two hours for the first draft, though I keep going back to it every few days and tweaking paragraphs or reworking sentences.

I had the prompt floating around in my head for a few weeks. Once I had an idea, it took a couple hours to churn out the rough draft. Left it for a few days before going back and revising it. From first to final drafts, maybe about 5 days?

For me, I rewrote the first paragraph like 5 times before I was satisfied with it. And I already wrote the conclusion in one of my drafts of the beginning. Now to work on the body...

5 inches 10 CHAR

Common App: The six most mind-numbing/painful months of my life.

Then, about five days before the deadline for the app, I sat down and threw out everything I wrote previously ...and wrote my essay.

lol wow. 6 months of writing and then settling for something last minute? haha, well at least it worked for you

I always manage to get inspired and write like crazy when I'm running on no-sleep. Like now, it's 6:30am and I haven't been to sleep, yet my mind is racing.. at least I've finally finished one of my short answers? :D

superbumplol

i wrote my only essay in one hour. i have a lot of revising to do.
