How long did you travel for UCSB Insight?

Just out of curiosity.
State your county, city, time, and distance (optional).

Distance: 120 miles

Hope you don’t mind, but back in 2005 :)

County: San Francisco

Haha, well it was a great time for me to explore another part of the state. The great thing about California is that you can move 6+ driving hours and still find a college you can pay in-state tuition for. Not many students of other states have that luxury, and are forced to stay close to home.

anyone else :)

same,

Looks like you and me are the same. I’m going to UCSB today, so your 2.5 hour time better hold true! I was looking at 3-3.5 hours… and that would just suck. Since, you know, it would mean I shouldn’t be sitting here right now and ought to get moving.

“Ethnicity: Asian
Ethnic Power: Teleportation
Actual Time: 5secs”

^Hah. Crazy Asians.

So I finally drove up there for a Saturday tour. Took 4 hours due to us getting lost, both on our way up there and back lol.

So, this is probably the wrong place for it, but I feel like posting some of my impressions. Reading about the school, extensively as I do, left a completely different impression than how the school actually was.

-I didn’t feel the pressure of the white, attractive, surfer, blonde, etc stereotype that goes on about UCSB. I saw the same sort of people there that I’d see anywhere else, except maybe more Asians.

-Was a little disappointed at the whole “nature” thing. I didn’t get very close to the beach, the ocean was beautiful, but the mountains were the same old mountains I see everywhere in California. The surrounding area was still a town resembling any other California town, rather than the natural beauty I was expecting.

-Is it just me, or does the place look really similar to UC Irvine? I got Deja Vu when I was at the University Center. I walked away thinking that, had I not done any research on the two schools, they would have looked exactly the same to me…besides for the lagoon, lol. I was expecting some more beach, if that makes sense. I never saw it from campus, it looked like it was below some cliffs.

-The students seemed really nice and were helpful, moreso than the average person I see walking around anyways. They were cheerful and actually seemed liked they cared. Except I didn’t know about the bike path rule and was yelled at by someone for that, lol.

-I didn’t notice a party atmosphere… but I guess I shouldn’t expect to see it from just a 2 hour tour.

-Didn’t get close to Isla Vista, but it was cleaner than I imagined it to be.

-For some reason, I thought the buildings would be all run down. I heard that from people who visited the campus and I saw pictures of the College of Creative Studies. They are actually very nice and modern looking.

“Except I didn’t know about the bike path rule and was yelled at by someone for that, lol.”

^haha. Yep, bikers get the right-of-way.

County: Santa Clara
