How long does it take for your child's school to send transcripts?

My daughter has put in several requests to her high school to send transcripts. Each time, it has taken approximately 3.5 weeks to get them in the mail. This seems like a long time to me, especially since they just started charging us to send transcripts.

When my older daughter was a senior three years ago, they would have them out in less than a week. Maybe in these bad economic times, they have cut back on people who work on transcripts.

I was just wondering if this was the norm. She is stressed out in case any of her rolling admission schools ask for first marking period grades because it take so long.

Thanks for the feedback.

Public HS? Around here they make up their own “guidelines.” Our local’s policy appears to be: “We send them out when our professional staff tells us to.” Generally that means when the full set (ie, all schools the student is applying to) of transcripts and recommendation letters have been reviewed and approved by the appropriate GC … with exception made for ED and EA applications.

Unless your younger D is applying EA or ED, you might want to let this issue ride another month or two. Some colleges with Jan 1 deadlines won’t even start reviewing applications until December.

My kids go to a small public high school (less than 80 students in the graduating class). They sent out my D’s transcripts within a week of getting the request. We had to provide addressed envelopes with postage, but did not have any other fee.

I electronically requested my transcripts to be sent last week. Binghamton and UMass Amherst got my transcript a few days later and for Rutgers and Penn State it is still pending.

Our guidance counselors told us sending the transcripts would take 1-2 weeks…

30 days. 28 days if you bring her a Starbucks when you ask.

D2’s school uses Naviance. Once we indicate an application is sent online, then all other supporting documents (transcript, LORs, school reports) go out automatically. It is also tied in with Common App, so we could see if they have been download by each school.

Wow, at my high school which is a small charter school with about 400 students total (108 seniors) the turn around rate for a transcript is at the MOST 5 hours.

@oldfort,

I also use naviance.

@EnticingPlague,

we have 320 seniors so it takes longer but I don’t understand why it takes a few weeks when it only takes your school 5 hours.

Is this really an issue? Colleges don’t hold late transcripts against students in the app process.

It is an issue if a school is rolling admission.

From what I’ve seen from schools with rolling admission their app will be put on a hold and they will specifically told what is missing. Unless this occurs late in the app process I doubt this is a real impact.

If it’s rolling, or if there is scholarship involved, earlier you get your information in, earlier you find out and the chance maybe even better.

I think our school asked for two weeks, though I know for younger son there was a mix up on a request and they got that one out in less than a week.

We requested transcripts over three weeks ago from our large public high school. Have not received any back yet (they are given to us in a sealed envelope and we mail). School has yet to calculate GPA or class rank yet so that is the hold up - they say they are working in it. Very,very annoyed here because at the start of the school year they sent out all of these forms admonishing students to be organized and to give two weeks notice to get transcripts etc… Feel that they should follow their own advice! Child has multiple applications in with SAT scores received just waiting on the transcripts to arrive! UGH!

Our school doesn’t send them. Student puts in a request and pays ($2/transcript) and it is picked up the next day in a sealed envelope. We have to address and send them.

This issue does matter for students in rolling admissions. It can really affect their housing options if dorms are in high demand.

Happykid’s HS required that transcripts be requested one month in advance.

There is a form that students turn into the GC to request the transcript. You pay $2 per transcript and you are supposed to give 3 weeks notice. The GC sends the transcript electronically.

HS now uses Parchment. DD sent GC online request last Sunday, acknowledged Monday, GC uploaded Friday, and DD sent off to CA schools yesterday: 6 days total! Of course, D made an appt with GC Wed to check status of transcript and school summary forms. Speed impressed me!

We use Naviance too-- transcripts for the senior class are ready but not uploaded yet. GC volunteered to scan D’s into the system because she was nervous. Happened that day, and they had been downloaded by most of the colleges she applied shortly thereafter. If I had tried to do this before Naviance I’d have torn out all my hair by now! A month seems crazy to me unless the school is seriously understaffed.

On the average, it appears to be about three weeks.
