how long does it take to become a prof. in chemical engineering, if I want to be more focused on teaching in a university than research.

4 years for undergrad, 5-7 years for the PhD, a couple years of post-doc positions while searching for a tenure track spot… call it 12 years from freshman year to one’s first assistant professor position.

There’s no way around the research though, especially in physical sciences and engineering. It’s what professors “do” to earn their keep.

“I want to be more focused on teaching”

You may want to skip the Ph.D., and look for teaching positions at community colleges that will hire you with only an M.S. Most university departments will expect you to pursue a research program in addition to your teaching.
