How long does it take to finish the GE requirements ?

I really like Duke, but the lack of an open curriculum is a turn off. Are the GE requirements too rigorous ?

As a freshman at Duke, I would say that the curriculum is really wide-open. The general requirement don’t really seem like requirements and there are so many different types of classes that fulfill requirements. Also, 1 class can fulfill multiple requirements which is a plus. There really isn’t a specific time that it takes to finish GE requirements. First of all, you are going to knock out several requirements just within your major. Say you are majoring in biology–you will easily knock out your 2 science, 2 quantitative studies requirements. The same goes for other majors. With a liberal arts education, its not like you are forced to take an array of subjects, it just opens up some possibilities. People may take a class just for a requirement, but realize thats really what they enjoy and want to major in. The GE requirements can be as rigorous or unrigorous (is that a word) as you want. For instance, i am not a major in any of the sciences, but i found a pretty easy, but interesting science class to satisfy my major. The requirements should definetly not be a turn off for you, students come in worried about them, but after 3 years you are bound to fulfill your requirements based on whatever you are taking. hope this helps
