My primary application was verified July 20th. So far, I received 11 secondaries, but I am still waiting on a few more. Does it take a couple of weeks to a month to get them all?

Thank you!

It just depends on the school. Some start sending them out in July and some don’t do it well into august or beyond. Some schools screen before sending secondaries, so if that consists of more than looking at your stats then it can take a while.

OP, I am not able to answer your question. This is because DS’s primary has not been verified yet. (But he received several secondaries.)

Could you share with us when you submitted your primary to AMCAS? Thanks!

Well I submitted my primary application I think on July 1st. Within the next two weeks, I got four secondaries. My primary got verified on July 20th; that week I got 7 more secondary applications.
Hope that helps

Yep - sometimes longer

Verified July 2nd, I’ve received about 25 secondaries out of 41 schools I applied to.

The UC’s all screen for secondaries (UCSD and UCI do it especially heavily.)

^^ Did you get any advice about the need to apply to so many schools? Just curious how you determined that. As I saw my list grow over 20, I started becoming concerned, and now there is a couple of secondaries that I am not even returning because I realized I never had much interest on those schools anyway…

41 schools–wow! Have you had time to finish all the secondaries? I can barely keep my list of 11 straight (I find that alphabetical order helps a bunch!) and can’t imagine having 30 more to work on. Do you have any advice for getting everything done and staying organized?

rainbowbrite: Are you a California resident? So far, I only know an applicant from that state would apply to so many due to her/his disadvantage position.

Somewhat related question:
Before you are verified by AMCAS, is it OK to ask your college to send in your combined premed committee letter (bundled with your LORs in the same packet) to AMCAS? Will AMCAS know what to do with your premed committee letter if they have received your primary but have not verified you?

DS’s list also grows slightly over 20. Now, he may not even complete some secondaries, I think.

Is there a benefit to sending them before verification? The way I understand it, schools only receive your primary from AMCAS after verification, and then forward your letters on as they get them. If schools wait to consider you until they have your letters etc, then I could see sending them early would be an advantage. But, at the same time, I doubt a sizable percentage of applicants has letters of rec ready to go before verification, and I bet med schools deal with letters of rec arriving after primaries all the time, so I can’t imagine the benefit of sending them all together would be that great. Really, I’m just thinking out loud here.

But in terms of “will they know what to do with it” I can’t imagine that they wouldn’t. Your son will need to print a cover letter for his letter that has his AAMC ID number on it, the letter ID number, and a barcode. It’s the form he signs to waive FERPA rights. Presumably anything that’s attached to the form/numbers/barcode will be added to his file, and his AMCAS website will be updated to reflect that.

Lol yup california.

I applied to 41 because as I looked at my list of 15, I started freaking out thinking I wouldn’t get anywhere. I have a 3.66cGPA and a 3.71sGPA with a 36P mcat, but my EC’s are very weak. Ive got 2 years of research with no pubs (about 1200 hours), and 150 hours of clinical volunteering, with 405 hours of teaching experience. So, I decided to add 12 more schools just to be safe.

Then I looked at my list of 27 and added 9 more just to be safe.

And then 5 more.

I’ve finished 15 secondaries, and I’m probably only going to do 10 more at MOST.

I really cant stand the thought of going through 1.5x more of what I’ve been going through the last few days.

California or not, no one should have to apply to more than 25 schools to get an acceptance, especially with a 3.6/36.

I know, I’m kinda regretting it now.

I don’t think I’ll submit more than 25 secondaries at most.

Probably 20 actually. I’ve done 15, and plan to do UCLA, OHSU, UCSF, and USC soon, but I can’t really think of anywhere else that I would really want to do another set of secondaries. Maybe NYMC and VCU.

AMCAS first transmits the information to the medical schools after the student is verified and then whatever comes after that (like the Letter Packet, etc) is transmitted automatically. There is no way to request to AMCAS to send some information in particular. The student is able to check online in AMCAS wether it has received the letters or not. ( I am one of those checking daily for that update!)

If I were you, I would get your faculty committee to send out your letters of rec as soon as possible. I had them sent out before I even submitted my AMCAS application. I got an email saying they received them. All they do is hold on to them. If you don’t have everything submitted, the verification process will take longer than it has to. So yes, send in your letters of rec as soon as you can :)
