How long does it take to receive a PIN for completing the FAFSA?

I applied for both a parent and student PIN on the morning of 1/4/09. How many days does it typically take to receive them and are they sent via email or post office mail?

Thanks.

I am in the same boat, somewhat. I actually received my pin on line, but am awaiting verification of my pin (checking w/Social Security Administration to verify #s). I received mine on line on 1/2 but it takes 1-3 business days for verification. I will not receive verification via email...basically have to keep trying to log on to my FAFSA changed 2009-2010 and proceed to send to schools.

Radannie - did your PIN get emailed to you and how long did it take? It's been three days and I have not received them yet.

My son applied for his PIN this weekend too. He self selected the PIN, so he has the number. There was some disclaimer that it can't be used for certain things (signing loan docs?) until it is verified (1-3 business days). But, it is good immediately for the FAFSA. Since you applied on a Sunday, it has only been 2 business days so far. He hasn't received confirmation yet either.

Don't worry. FAFSA's don't start getting filed until mid to late January. You have more than enough time to apply for a PIN again if you have to.

2 years ago, it only took a few days to get the PIN by e-mail. Maybe there is a big rush for PINs at the begining of the year when the new FAFSA is available.

I actually received my daughter's PIN on line. This am I just created my own (parent) pin and was able to use it to electronically sign my FAFSA and submit it (did not need to wait 3 days for verification)
You can always call the help line. They are super friendly and helpful. They can also tell you if your PIN has been verified.
