How long does it take you to read?

..A novel you're reading for pleasure? Per page? Per book?

I usually read two books outside of school per week (funny, 'cause I read more outside of school than in it), but these past few days, the only reading I've been doing is for collegeboard exams.

1 ppm

10char

that's a hard one. I read a lot...some weeks, 9 books (if I don't have a lot to do, but still 300-400 page books) or a few long ones. I'd say, 85 pages an hour? I read pretty fast, but If I'm sick (like now) and unfocused/tired, probably like 40 pages an hour.

^^^social life much?????

School?
You'd be lucky if I even opened the book.
Pleasure?
Depends
during the school year I don't have much time to read. In the summer, I read like crazy. Nothing with substance though, lol.
I can read 200+ within a few hours, if the book is good. I'm completely dependent on my interest/the suspense of the book.

I guess I like historical fiction (Carolyn Meyer), chicklit (Plum Skyes), teendramatype stuff (Ann Brashares), romance (Nicholas Sparks), mystery/suspense (Mary Higgins Clark), and I guess whatever you'd characterize Dan Brown as.

Erm... depends on how interesting it is, page size, etc. I can read a history text at about a minute per page and I can read a book for pleasure in about half that time. I usually read about a book a day.

I read Harry Potter 6 in about a day and a half...pretty much continuously.

I read the 5th Harry Potter in one day... I just couldn't put it down =]. Usually it takes me a few weeks to read a good sized book, but I usually read like 5 books at once cause I can't keep focus on one thing...

It depends on what type of writing it is. Philosophy and terse texts take longer than chick books. But I forget how long it takes me to read... haha I'll try reading sometime soon.

At the present time, I'm reading The Namesake and because I love it so much, I'm reading as slow as possible so it lasts longer :D. I'm using it for english class now so I'll have to speed up soon but I'm light years ahead of the rest of the class.

With other stuff, I'm not the fastest reader. I can fly through textbooks if I've already summarized the content.

if its a fun read, (fantasy, chickflick, etc.) 100+ pages per hour (I usually read around 15-30 sec sec per page)

history textbook, chem textbook: 1 minute per page D:

;) I never have trouble reading a class book on time...and still make contributions during discussion in class.

I devoured Harry Potter no. 4 in a day. But I don't usually go quite that fast. During the school year I might read one to two books a week outside of school...no time for more, really.

Last harry potter book took me around 7 hours. Maybe 6, I don't remember exactly. I started a little after midnight :P

So thats about 1.5 pages a minute.

same here for Harry Potter. It kinda sux b/c I really wanna savor the last book but I don't know if I'll be able to stop myself.

ok.. so what about required classics for english class? like, Hamlet and The Catcher in the Rye?

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=328730%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=328730</a></p>

Anyways, I read for content. I generally have no attention span for books that I perceive as content-less.

US News/Time/other such magazines: I can read articles in a few minutes. Otherwise though, I spend several minutes per page (since I generally don't like missing out on details)

Required classics take me forever to read. Like for some pages it can take five minutes to a page.

Mostly because I do a lot of underlining/notetaking in the background.

For history and stuff like that, though, it's a pretty flat 10-20 pages/hour.

How are you people getting down to 30seconds per page? I consider myself a decently fast reader, and I can read a page in 60 or so seconds. Do you work yourself up to 30s by just reading a ton? Or is it more just a skill you're born with? Also, how much do you lose on comprehension? Would you understand the book as fully as if you were reading much slower?

i just took a reading test, and i got about 150 words per minute with 100% comprehension. the average is 200 wpm, 60% comprehension. a "good reader" does 1000 words per minute w/ 85% comprehension. ugh. i'm so slow. i tried not to stop and re-read also.
