How long does it usually take for these colleges to admit students?

Adelphi University, Pace University, New York Institute of Technology, and 5 CUNY schools.

I applied to CUNY/sent in application on October 20, 2012. Sent in Common App on October 25, 2012 to Adelphi, Pace, and NYIT.

I know everything was sent in correctly because when I log onto my CUNY portal account and go to my application status, I just get a list of requested colleges/choices & when I log into Common App, every arrow is green and it says ''downloaded on (date here). I'm pretty sure I sent in my transcript and everything else too....

NYIT says: ''The Early Action deadline has been extended. Completed Early Action applications for the fall 2013 semester submitted prior to Dec. 17 will receive a decision by Jan. 17 and will be given first consideration for merit scholarships awarded by the Admissions office.''

Pace says: ''Early Action applicants will be notified in early January. Incomplete Early Action applications will be reviewed for regular decision.''

....but I've already waited about a month....What's happening here? Should I worry?

No, why would you worry? These are early action schools which will notify everyone at once, on the dates specified. Are you thinking of rolling decision, maybe? That’s where they notify applicants on an on-going basis as they read applications, not all at one time. Good luck! Waiting is hard, isn’t it?

eliza, unless a college has so-called “rolling admissions” – and they tell you if they do that – they generally send out all of their early decisions on one date, no matter when you applied. (And later they do the same thing with their regular decisions in March.) That’s because they want to look at the whole pool of applicants before making a final decision on anyone, and/or they don’t want people who were easy admits or easy rejections to know that based on getting a quick decision, and other people to know they were on the bubble.

Those web site quotes you give mean that NYIT will probably not notify you of its decision on your application until the second week in January, and Pace will probably be on about the same schedule.

And that’s assuming you said you were applying “Early Action”. (You don’t make clear that you submitted that kind of application.) If you didn’t apply Early Action, don’t expect to hear anything until late March. (Although you may be able to convert your NYIT application to an Early Action application if you contact them before December 17 and ask to do that.)

I don’t know about Adelphi and the CUNY schools. The CUNY colleges may have rolling admissions, but even that doesn’t guarantee you will hear promptly one way or the other. Sometimes rolling admissions schools put some applications that aren’t clear admits or rejects on hold until they get a better sense of what the whole applicant pool looks like. It’s really frustrating if that happens to you, and waiting is tense (because then you DO know that you are on the bubble), but there’s nothing you can do about it.

EDIT TO ADD: I looked at the Hunter College website. It does have rolling admissions. But it also just announced two weeks ago that applications for Spring 2013 admissions were now closed. They may have just started looking at the applications for Fall 2013. Honestly, you really can’t start worrying too much until the end of the month.

Good luck! The acceptances will come soon! Generally there is a date posted. Make yourself a note of the dates–sometimes there is a time that acceptances go out also, so you can check online to see acceptances then. If the school has a forum here on CC you can find when acceptances are given out there.

CUNY is rolling admissions. They will not act on your application until your application is complete. While you sent in your application on October 20, 2012 did you

Pay your application fee
Submit your test scores to UAPC (code 2950)
Did you submit the supplemental work; for example, Baruch asks for recommendation letters and an essay. While they state that it is optional, they still “recommend” that you submit the items.

Did you put your Student ID # on your application, so that CUNY can pull your transcripts.

If you submitted any paperwork to CUNY UAPC, did you include your “W” number so that all of your information con go into your file?

If you have submitted everything; CUNY takes approximately 8 weeks to make a decision once the file is complete.

Hopefully, next week, your principal should be getting the CUNY reports with a list of all of the students from your school who have applied and their application status (the reports are late). If your GC does not recieve anything from your principal by the end of next week, s/he could contact your CUNY rep (every school now has a dedicated rep they can contact vs. contacting the call center). If CUNY came to your school to do a presentation, it was probably your school’s rep that gave to presentation.

I know that it seems like you have been waiting forever for a desicion, but hang in there a little while longer.

All the best

If you applied to the Honors College, the deadline has been pushed back to December 14

Oh okay thanks guys
